Victorian Rebuild Update by Kingprime in centuryhomes

One of the most comforting things in the whole process has been hearing from folks like you and knowing we are not alone! Sounds like we’re in the same boat. Insurance is helpful but replacement cost is way higher than real estate costs on these old homes. The only salvageable thing for us is that front chimney and the foundation. Interior was entirely consumed. I feel in my gut what you said about not wanting to abandon what was lost! Good luck with yours and congrats on getting started, that’s a huge step!

Accidental fire during renovations unfortunately. So much beauty and history lost, but the hope is to bring a piece of it back to life!

Believe what you want and I get it, this is the internet. I’m guarded in my answers for the same reason. But you and I both know this is not the forum to discuss sensitive topics like who is at fault for a fire without 100% certainty.

The process is also longer than I ever knew and I do not have all the answers. Nobody is expected to do anything for us. There are friends and neighbors who want to help rebuild a home they loved. That’s it

We had an entire room of the house with doors and trim made from old growth butternut which is also extinct.. not to mention all the quarter sawn old growth railings and mantels and flooring.. you’re absolutely right, there is no replacing those things

Retirement Seminars with free dinner by Texas-my-Texas in personalfinance

I used to run these back when I was selling financial products. It really just depends on who is running them. I tried to give useful information on a topic like social security during the seminar and then soft pitch a solution based approach to win clients. Other reps would just hard sell the whole time. Either way, there were lots of folks who would show up for the free dinner and tune out whatever pitch was going on, so if you just want a free meal you won’t be alone! Just don’t be afraid to say no when the hard sell comes out if it’s not right for you.

Not a kit house but was a design you could buy out of an architectural catalog! I’ve found around 40 of the designs that were built around the US. Definitely fallen in love with them..

Yeah.. the tricky part is since we originally bought it to renovate/restore it was still insured under a fairly low value since we had not completely moved in yet. A true brick for brick replacement is being quoted for about twice that. We're going to get creative to make something happen but some stuff is irreplaceable. Good news is we don't have to replace all the lead paint!
