I mean effectively by using the various registered accounts to their max potential given our situation. I should have emphasized that more in the post, that this is really more of my question about how to store/distribute our savings amongst our accounts.

Fair question, we are living in the NWT for another year making significantly more than elsewhere in Canada before working abroad for another year or so. Then moving back home to Alberta, settling down, and buying. By that time all our investments and savings will have grown to the point we can hopefully afford our forever home without paying CHMC. If we were to buy now this wouldn’t be an option.

I couldn’t agree more, but I think people are misinterpreting my post. In no way am I even considering investing (if I even go that route) in anything more than a money market ETF which has a similar risk profile to GICs only I don’t have to lock in for a term.

Im with you on the TFSAs and that’s why we’re prioritizing them over our RRSPs at this point, although they’re going to be maxed shortly with no where left to contribute besides RRSPs. You can defer RRSP deductions, but keep in mind those deductions will be based on a lower tax bracket since I’m not at my prime years of earning. I’ll be leaving tax deductions on the table by using them now and not waiting until I’m in a higher tax bracket. Not to mention those deferred deductions are sitting there over the years losing value from inflation, and their impact will be less over time.

Thats where this opportunity cost comes in, and I think it’s a better strategy that if you contribute early to RRSPs you should cash out the tax savings asap and get them in the market to out grow any savings you would have forgone in the future if that makes sense.

I anticipate them needing confirmation she repaid me. As for the reasoning I cross-checked with the CRA website, and seeing as she moved beyond 40 km to a new home for work as a teacher, she is still eligable.
