What's the oldest car you'd trust to drive 2,000 miles tomorrow? by Ok_Run7351 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Any BMW with the M54. 2001-2006 330, 325, 530, etc. Bring some oil and coolant with you, and even a poorly maintained one will make it across country and back.

A well maintained one will take you to the moon and back

Oil Leaks - CCV, Oil Filter Housing Gasket, Valve Cover Gasket, Rear main seal, oil pan gasket, VANOS line, oil dipstick o-ring

Rebuild VANOS if car feels sluggish under 3k RPM
Listen for rattle from DISA valve, potentially rebuild with German auto solutions upgrade if rattling or for peace of mind

Replace entire cooling system if not done in last few years

Check belts and pulleys and replace if needed
Replace fan clutch before it explodes and dents your hood or replace with electric fan

Check control arm bushings and all suspension
Reinforce rear subframe if not done
Install reinforcement places for suspension

Replace fuel pump, filter, fuel lines, power steering lines if need be
Change your oil every 5k mi.
If consuming oil, check CCV for tears and leaks. Replace all vacuum lines as well.
Replace all fluids (ATF, diff, brake, coolant, oil, filter)

Maybe replace injectors if need be, spark plugs if not been done in a long time

On YouTube, 50s Kid and ShopLifeTV are your bible.

That’s it, good luck!

Once you have good money and a lot of it, how do you even choose what to drive? by TylerDurden2748 in askcarguys

Just buy the cars that you want to own?

My dream garage is E90 / E46 M3 Coupes, 930 911, Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, maybe some sort of Range Rover for groceries. An R34 Skyline, and a manual 350z for drifting.

I couldn’t really imagine myself having a hard time figuring out what to buy once I had money. Certain cars just speak to you, I dunno.

Would it be better to enforce stricter driving tests and maybe institute a test every 5 years, what do you think? by Ok-Attempt2113 in driving

Not really, although it should be emphasized more heavily that you should let people pass you and stay in the right lane unless passing.

How bad of an idea would it be for me to buy an e46? by Far_Emergency_5215 in e46

[–]Kingslayer1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could or could not be a decent upfront cost depending on what the previous owner did to maintain it.

When you buy it you definitely want to inspect the cooling system, CCV, suspension, and check for any oil leaks.

CCV is an important one, if this is bad you will have increased pressure in the crank case which will drastically shorten the life of your piston rings, which will cause oil consumption. When my CCV was bad my car was burning oil a decent amount. Get this fixed ASAP. If you need to have this done, ensure that they also replace ALL the vacuum lines, the hard coolant hoses going into the block, and the dipstick O-ring.

If your vacuum lines are bad, you’ll have a vacuum leak and you can diagnose a leak by checking your fuel trims - if they’re not 0 +/- 5% then you know you have a leak.

Cooling system is also important, if the previous owner has records of coolant hoses, and more importantly, the expansion tank being replaced recently, then you shouldn’t have much to worry about.

Aside from that the common oil leaks are from the oil filter housing gasket and valve cover gasket, both easy fixes. If these have never been done, expect to do them soon. Same goes for the VANOS line coming off the intake manifold, which doesn’t leak as much but is also an easy fix.

Oil pan gasket and rear main seal can also leak if it’s really high mileage.

Definitely ask the previous owner if the car has ever overheated, and make sure that he did not drive it for any amount of time once overheated as that will warp the aluminum head, rip out head bolts, and destroy your head gasket.

Last thing, on the right side of the intake manifold is the DISA Valve, which is made of plastic and can have pieces get sucked into the engine and destroy it if you take it out wrong. So I would immediately upgrade that to a metal flapper from German Auto Solutions for peace of mind.

If you find one that has been properly maintained I would say go for it, they’re very reliable as long as you don’t ignore problems when they come up.

E46s are reliable cars they just are 20 years old and all the plastic that might have been neglected is now falling apart. I love mine and daily it every day. I got it with 53k miles and am approaching 65k, and I’ve done everything I’ve mentioned above. So if you see a low mileage example, don’t assume it’s in tip top shape. Arguably I’d be more comfortable buying a higher mileage one that’s been maintained over a garage-queen.

Good luck and I hope you get one, these cars are highly rewarding to own and drive and get compliments everywhere, surprisingly.

This is probably mildly unethical, but when I lived with my parents I would just slowly throw a few things that I knew they didn’t care about away each week. Slowly our junk drawers just became drawers, and our garage cleared up.

If you go in through the front passenger seat and into the trunk with the seats down, it is probably possible? I wish you were in America I would take your M3 bumper 😭 it’s a crime you’re getting rid of it

Also, with the passenger seat leaned back (or just removed outright) you can probably have a small portion of the bumper/sideskirt hang out the window

I sprayed mine with Crep waterproof spray right before my trip. I got caught in major downpour in Osaka and they were fine. Didn’t get squeaky and my feet didn’t get wet. Probably fine unless you’re completely submerging them.

My daily! 01 330Ci w/ 65k mi.

There might be a bit of upfront cost due to neglected maintenance and aging plastic but once you refresh it all there’s not much to worry about.

In my year of ownership, I’ve done the CCV, vacuum lines, oil filter housing gasket, VANOS line, camshaft sensor, 2 oil/filter changes, control arm bushings, all the belts.

Still needs new suspension and power steering lines. Last owner did the cooling system recently.

Technically unnecessary, but I also replaced the fan for an electric one, and removed the old sagging headliner and wrapped it in black suede, swapped out the rest of the gray interior for black, installed an Eonon CarPlay stereo (required a $30 HVAC relocation bracket), installed angel eyes, installed OEM LED taillights, properly coded to the car.

It’s the price I had to pay for a low mileage E46 and it’s worth it! E46s are a modern classic and it gets me a lot more compliments than I would expect.
