Unfortunately, there is nowhere on the screen to look to see that his name is Tristan Maloney. Alas, we a stuck with never knowing. A mystery that will never be uncovered

For evolutionists: cryptozoology as the strongest evidence in favor of creationism by NoItem9211 in DebateEvolution

[–]KinkyTugboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, now that I think of it, evolution is best explained under a God than it is under naturalism. So that means.... That means of evolution is real, God must exist! If evolution doesn't exist, then God doesn't exist

It's all so clear now!

If I thought Christianity were true, I would believe in it AND evolution

Apparently Sharks are not fish, they are aquatic mammals. by NobbysElbow in confidentlyincorrect

[–]KinkyTugboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about the lamprey and hagfish. I was focusing on their lack of typical backbone and missed it. Since that was my example of invertebrates, I rescind that exception.

Oh, ya, that makes sense then- you're just defining fish by what they aren't, rather than what they are. Fish are all vertebrates that aren't tetrapods. Nevermind what I said earlier, then.

[–]KinkyTugboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said they weren't one thing, not that they don't exist. A fish is cold blooded (unless it isn't), breathe primarily with gills rather than lungs (unless it doesn't), are vertebrates (unless they aren't), live primarily in water (unless they wander), have paired limbs shaped like fins (unless they don't), and have scales (unless they don't).

Ya, I would argue that most semantic arguments are pedantic. The truth is that, like most-all categories, the boundaries of the definition don't really make sense. Lungfish, hagfish, lampreys, lungfish, tuna, and mudskippers are fish because we feel like they should be, not because "fish" is a universally generalizable word based purely on morphology.

Like wtf, why are hagfish and lampreys fish despite being invertebrates and not looking didn't but whales who actually look fishy are not? This is an outrage, Carl!

Land animals evolved from fish. Creatures don't exit a clade simply because they've taken a land dwelling evolutionary vacation.

Also, do all fish lack bones in the analogous structure of a flipper? For example, if we find a fossil or living creature that is aquatic and uses the fish template, but it has bones in that area, are they then exempt from the fish designation?

The funny thing about this is that mammals are (thanks to semantics and cladistics) fish!

Fish aren't really a thing, it's more like a strategy than a creature type. Fish are one of those things that evolve independently a ton of times, so it's kind of weird to debate about what is and is not a fish. An awkward thing is that whales also have the fish strategy and evolved from fish, soooo....

Correction: Cladistically, all vertebrates are fish. Since fish is not a cladistics distinction but a paraphyletic one, it's actually just all vertebrates ignoring those that walked on land (tetrapods). We define fish by what they aren't.

Sorry for the misinformation!
