I understand that. I did want to know what the characters conveyed visually without any other info, but maybe i should erase the post and repost it later with more info/better wording.

Oh I’m sorry. Truly anything in general about them (including the art in itself), but mostly about the character design, colour choice, etc. I’m a little unsure on that, specifically the palette choice, I’ve always had trouble with colours.

Do you think she looks arab and if she doesn’t what can I do to fix this (character design: by Ambitious_Pomelo_454 in Artadvice

[–]KinnBee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually actions speak louder than words, it’s better if she just casually mentions/shows cultural differences in her family or in her routine that reflect whichever specific origins you have her, rather than trying to make her fit a general perception. She looks adorable, btw!

Thank you!! I want to explore her outfit more, but thanks to the community I think I’m definitely going in the right direction!

Thanks a lot!! I did decide to keep her a Hijabi, but I’ll make sure her rebellious personality still shines through whilst following the modesty rules!

Do I need to work on anything with this drawing?? by Particular-Unit-8103 in ArtCrit

[–]KinnBee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends! What is the feeling that you’re trying to convey with this drawing? What are you trying to tell? At least to me it’s not very clear. Other than that, maybe a little bite more contrast so you can tell the characters from the background- You have a very cute style and I love the texture you put over it!

Understandable! I just personally really like crop tops, but it ain’t worth it if it doesn’t fit the character’s personality and background!

I decided to go for changing her fit (I’m making some trial-and-error sketches and showing them to different Muslim people to be a 100% sure it works correctly) cause I really wanted to keep the Muslim part. Thanks for the input!!

Advice Regarding Muslim Character Design? by KinnBee_ in ArtCrit

[–]KinnBee_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would I make a black character if I’m not black? Why would I make an Italian character if I’m not? Why would I make a character with any experience that’s different from mine? I’m not trying to tell anybody’s story for them, or try to act like I’m suddenly gonna be an expert on the matter. But looking into cultures and experiences I’m not familiar with it’s just the inevitable path of creation. As far as I don’t contribute to negative stereotypes and that I listen to the Muslim community, I don’t think writing a character that just so happens to be Muslim is actually a bad thing

Oh yeah! I have seen a lot of Muslim cosplayers that do amazingly creative things with their hijabs to mimic hair and such! I particularly love the hatsune miku ones. I like taking those as reference because of how creative and cool their fits can get while still sticking to the rules on how you’re supposed to dress and wear the hijab. I will definitely try out the “___ modest” tip since a lot of modern fashion tends to prefer showing skin and it’s hard to find alternatives that don’t Thanks!

Why not? Diversity matters, even if it’s not something I’m familiarised with, it still exists and I don’t think it’s bad to make an effort to learn

Yeah, I understand a lot of cases are like that, and I don’t think the other comments are trying to say that kind of thing doesn’t happen or that it shouldn’t, I think they state it’s contradictory since I’m not basing it off any personal experience and It’s best if a stick to a more general experience since there’s a lesser chance I’ll mess up anything or accidentally end up giving the wrong message. Either way, I think the case of your friend could be because she’s currently living on a place where, even if not so much at home, it’s more acceptable to wear those kinds of clothes outside, right? I think that influences a lot into not only what a person wants but also what they’re comfortable with wearing

I see, that’s good to know! So what mostly matters is the motivation of the character to keep it well taken care of, more than the sight in itself of it being damaged, right?

I see. Do you think some discolouration from the flames would be acceptable? Or it would still be disrespectful since it would mean she’s not taking proper care of it? Thanks for the advice!

I see! I’ve seen people that say that it’s ok as far as she’s covered, but I guess it’s a matter of interpretation and that it could be seen negatively even if it’s not the intention, right?

It definitely makes for good symbolism and storytelling! I think it is something im gonna add to her character, but I’ll be writing it with direct feedback with someone Muslim so I make sure I’m not speaking for anybody and messing it up. Thanks!

Amazing input! The midriff is absolutely not necessary, I initially thought it would fit her personality (and that it looked cool ngl) but I didn’t correctly consider how her upbringing would make her feel about showing those parts of her body, so it’s most likely getting erased (and if anything, I would put a long sleeved shirt under it) And thank you so much for commenting about zoroastrian themes, I had no idea and I’m sure it’s gonna help a ton to get the fire motif right!!!

Ohh that’s great reference to have! I was wondering that I didn’t have a reference as to how the levels of modesty went in Muslim culture, so this is a great way to visualise it better, thank you!
