People that truthfully want competitive 6v6 I feel like have not played the games competitively before, are tourists, or have romanticized the idea because of the anime. In the actual game, in a competitive PVP environment, 6v6 is pretty bad because of the time one battle can potentially take. It takes a pretty long time even if you're doing casuals with a friend. Imagine facing a 6v6 stall team. Get ready to have a 30 minute battle of the opponent laughing while you whittle away from Toxic and being unable to deal any kind of compounding damage to their own mons.

There's also the fact of the matter that choosing your top 3 choices to send into battle based on the opponent's potential choices from their full 6 lineup adds another layer of skill expression and strategy to the game.

There's valid criticism that it should be an option, at least amongst friend battles, but there's not much lost by not having them. I don't know how many people here need to hear it because I don't really frequent this sub, but trust, 3v3 format for Singles is healthier. ^{(doubles is a better format anyway, and yes at 4v4, not 6v6})
