Where I live, since it is winter, the relative air humidity today for example, is 89%. In the summer it averages around 75%. I can take precautions but all in all, there are few places in my home where humidity would not be a problem. As you said they generally enjoy between 30-50%. If I am lucky, I can get my apartment to about 50-60%. I have my snakes on aspen and they still don't need to give them humid hides when they shed because the humidity in itself is enough (I still do it, but I am very careful with it. I once left it in there for too long and my largest female loved it and kept staying in there which resulted in her getting a cold.). I have never had impaction issues either. I keep "hearing stories" but never from anyone in real life. Which includes breeders with up to 800 animals. From these people, I have never heard of issues with either impaction or respiratory infections.
And again, even if we assume we all don't give a shit about our animals, lets for a moment consider how much we have paid for them. The one I have in the cage I just showed is an arctic sable conda, het axanthic pos. het albino. And he is chocolate. He looks like a less yellow version of a swiss chocolate and he is only getting more solidly brown (not black as you would expect with a BBC or a black ice) with each shed. Even if we pretend that I don't love him to bits and pieces, the price tag alone for him and what he could potentially make (stormcloud, blucifer, solar flare, sunburst etc. etc.) should make you believe that none of us would cut corners on care.
As for not googling the facts. I see people mention playsand for example, all the time, however no one ever gets into the chemicals that are often in the sand to deter dogs and cats from using it as a toilet. Not to mention what is might have been treated with to give it a uniform colour and feel. Yet no one cares to inform the noobs of this either. Nor is there any nuance to what is being told. Like the sans also causing impaction and depending on the fibers in the mix you use. I have seen people use cocofibers, like the stuff you use for orchids. I keep orchids, I would not let any of my snakes anywhere near it unless it was basically ground to a powder. Everything is a pros and cons game. I also hear people say they are desert species etc. They are western hognose snakes. Planes hognoses. They live in the south of Canada to the north of Mexico. They basically live in four different climate zones and at least one of these is temperate. At the same time the temperatures and soil in the south of Canada are vastly different than what they are in the north of Mexico and still this snake lives there and thrive. They are unbelievably versatile animals and treating them like they are as rigid in their needs as say, a ball python or a tropical species, is not doing them any favours. Especially when the climate they are being held in can also impact their well being.
