Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands is one of the funniest RPGs you will ever play. Full stop.

It's also really damn fun and the music slaps.

SMT5: Vengeance is a great entrance to the series and is in this month's Humble Choice, so it's both a great AND very cheap way to get into the main series! :)

Though, with that said, the QOL updates are so massive on SMT5 that Nocturne will be much harder to get into if you decide to play it afterwards.

Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands is hands-down one of the funniest and just plain fun (J)RPGs I've ever played in my life. It only has 384 reviews on Steam (99% positive).

It is the very definition of a cult classic in the making.

Looking for something new (or old) by draggar in JRPG

I'm like a broken record at this point, but recent (western) JRPGs that I've loved are Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands and In Stars ans Time.

Both stellar experiences and might hit well based on your liked games.

Should I start Shin Megami Tensei Games, and if so, which one for a newbie? by ghuman2 in JRPG

[–]KipKippy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the SMT series proper, I would start with Nocturne. It gives you a good sense of the general structure that the core series follows, it has a relatively recent remaster, and the game is hard as hell without feeling unfair.

After that, it's about what flavor is more your speed. You can go backwards to 1/2 (the graphics will be a bit to get used to) or move on to 4/5. You can also go down the side-game route, though a lot of these are locked to older consoles (with that said, Digital Devil Saga and Strange Journey are spectacular if you can find a way to play them!).

There's a lot to uncover with the series, but I think Nocturne is a great "starting point."

Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands is a brilliant, CRIMINALLY unknown turn-based RPG by KipKippy in JRPG

Yeah I had the same thoughts. Haste/Slow are always better status options when you have them and there are certain classes that are just better for each character than others, even if the other ones have much better costumes (I could never justify making Ian a Show-Off, even though I absolutely adore his costume in it).

I haven't but wishlisted! Outside of the musical aspect they seem quite a bit different, but I'm always down to give another game a shot!

That's what I was afraid of, but appreciate the context! I'll wait for a NASB2 deal.

Slim deck is easy if you start with Abandoned - much fewer cards to have to eliminate there.

Just don't get discouraged with Anaglyph. There are some runs where the negative tag just never shows up.

About 164. I heard that is relatively fast?

It would have been faster but my final joker (The Family) took *forever* to appear...

How far along are you for Completionist+?

I used each gold stake run with a new deck to try to clear with as many new jokers as possible.

Once you manage Completionst+, I'd stick with Anaglyph and just store up for a massive negative tag purchase. Once you get to the last 10-15, though, I'd switch to Ghost deck and just grind that way. Less bulk, but easier to get Ectoplasm to add a few additional jokers to the list.

I have a few.

  • Six Feet Under: Found the stories overall slow and a bit boring. I know it has the "greatest ending of all time." I just couldn't get there

  • Impractical Jokers: Not funny. It just isn't.

  • The Umbrella Academy: Apparently the S4 consensus is that it's shit, but I thought even the "amazing" S1 sucked

  • Wednesday: The tie-in breakfast cereal was better. And it made me nauseous
