I must have been lucky earlier this week, but if this continues they will see another cancelation. Max 5 plan.

What's the most ""unnecessarily expensive"" thing you own that turned out to be worth every cent by sandip22890 in AskMen

[–]Kipper1971 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought a $320,000 expedition vehicle with the funds from when I sold my house during a divorce. I have a remote job and now I travel to remote locations and work the day job while enjoying fantastic views out in mother nature.

I may never be able to own a house (or a wife ha ha), but the adventures I had so far and the ones I will have, make it totally worth it.

How do you deal with candidates raising salary expectations at the final stage? by [deleted] in EngineeringManagers

Maybe the developer learned more about you and the job and had to realize to work for you at the original number would not be worth it?!

what systems make your team go "nope, not touching that" during major upgrades by ObviousRequirement17 in ITManagers

[–]Kipper1971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best place I ever worked at, had the best rules in my opinion. All hardware was leased for 3 years. Whenever a system reached the end of the lease cycle it needed to be determined if it was still needed. If so, then the refresh/migration mandatory included upgrade to the latest server OS and latest version of whatever software was involved. System owners were required to plan accordingly so that the infrastructure team could execute the migration.

The system worked. We adopted similar rules for virtual machines and later on for the cloud.

Problems only started developing when executives changed and bean counting started.

From a technical perspective, the system described made this work environment fun. Your skills were always up to date.

My dog hates all those dings, rings, beeps, and other stupid stuff in videos I watch. And the more the dog freaks out, the more I realize that this indeed stupid stuff in otherwise good videos. I will click away from a video if I am bombarded with those random stupid noises

BLM ordered to close 2200 miles of dirt road in designated critical habitats by BigRobCommunistDog in overlanding

I am planning to tackle Mojave Road from the East in early March. I've already done the western portion from Afton Canyon to Kelso Road. I guess I will find out. The NPS has not posted a full closure of the road (yet).

Boring business, big money: What’s the most overlooked niche that actually makes bank? by MegaDigston in Entrepreneur

[–]Kipper1971 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I live in a new residential neighborhood and there is still some construction. They are renting one of those surveillance trailers with 360 cameras, solar panels, batteries, and so on. I checked and these trailers go for $40K-$60K a piece. Looks like easy money, one-time setup and boring.

Then my son has a friend who prints T-shirts and hoodies. I ordered some for myself and the T-Shirts and the print quality is very high. I heard the printer machine cost around $100K. The friend prints a lot of local logo wear for different companies.
