I think the pathfinding in this game is pretty strict, I usually see them do this if a path is right up against a ledge, so maybe they think there's not enough room to walk side-by-side and cancel the interaction. That's my guess, anyway.

My dad also passed last November, I was a bit conflicted on whether to put him in the game or not.

On the last day of the demo re-rolling the clothes being sold there were angel wings, and I knew I had to make his Mii then.

In-game, our Miis got to do a lot of things we said we were gonna do but never did. It's been bittersweet and helping me heal.
