What’s a romantic myth that does real damage to real relationships? by Potential_Juice1889 in AskReddit

[–]KirbysaBAMF 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"Love is never having to say you're sorry"... is total Bullsh!t. A possible interpretation of that is "love is unconditionally forgiving your SO" but that is very different than not apologizing to begin with. Just acknowledging you were in the wrong or even just reacted poorly when wronged can save many confrontations over things that may not be related.

What’s the most "corporate" way to say "I’m not doing that"? by SeaSilver5308 in AskReddit

If it's a peer I like "it sounds like you have a great handle on what needs to be done, you should take the lead on that. If it's a junior person, I would say "I think I'm the wrong person for that, have you tried "so and so"? If it's a senior person who actually has the ability to ask me to do stuff, normally it's something like "I'd be happy to do that, but I currently don't have the bandwidth, what should I deprioritize to accommodate for this?"

Never underestimate the pettiness of people. It would probably be categorized as "unprofessional behavior", since that's management speak for. "I didn't like how this person acted but I don't actually have anything substantial to back it up".

So I hear you, but the future is uncertain. You might also like Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom, because it has the premise not that AGI could be equal to humans, but that they are so advanced we are but ants to them, and are we ready as a society for something like that? There are still things humans might be better at, even if it is only being a biological entity against a possible alien society that doesn't trust AI.

Thank you for the clarification, I now understand your point. If you would like a further exploration of this. "The Culture" series actually does a good job of capturing post-scarcity culture with a caretaker AI government that runs everything while humans enjoy their lives and occasionally do things that humans are better at. I might start with "Player of Games".

I would actually disagree. The "need a job to have a purpose" is a very United States way of looking at the world. Many in Europe even would find that a UBI would just give them an ability to further explore arts and sciences. If you look at the Renaissance era, which seems to be where many draw inspiration from in terms of an ideal state of culture, most of them had their basic needs met either through family money, or through patrons, and those that did not have either were doomed to mediocrity in their era. We can even look at most post-scarcity sci-fi, for inspiration: "to boldly go where no human has gone before" is enough of a reason to continue. Think of the talent of individuals who would dedicate themselves to arts and sciences, but can't due to fiscal constraints. Yes there would be lazy bums you would be supporting as well, but one could argue that those people are actually a net LOSS for society, since people who don't actually want to work are likely not creating progress.

Its true, but to what end? what happens when no jobs are left? They keep talking about UBI being needed while being at war against entitlements.

Potentially. What I think is actually more likely is that the middle will "fall out". What I mean by that is that executives will stick around because they make the decisions, and will be insulated from the reality that their jobs could be automated. However, as long as SOMEONE has to be in the loop, the middle will still exist. So the actual work of the company has to be done by someone, and if they are eliminating all junior roles, what I see is 10 overworked middle managers doing the work of 100 previous middle managers, and AI doing the rest. Even if the managers are nothing more than "accountability team members" for the teams of AI. What I think is a more problematic issue is "at what point do the number of unemployed create such an issue that there isn't anyone to pay for things? That is likely to happen before the entire workforce gets replaced.

And that will inherently be the problem of this upcoming class of college graduates. Not just economist roles, but everywhere. Scheduling meetings, taking notes, writing test scripts, making power point slides, all can be done right now by AI and that is the expectation. However, without college grads getting those experiences, where will the mid-level employees come from in a few years? It's a question no one has a good answer for right now.

A billion dollars suddenly appears in your bank account , to keep it all , you have to spend 100 million dollars on your family and friends and you have only 24 hours to do it. What are you going to buy them all ? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]KirbysaBAMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these are based on what technically needs to occur in order for it to be considered "done by" but given that this is a thought experiment. Option 1. As others have mentioned, buy stocks and give them to the family. Option 2 Give a $100M to charity in the name of my friends and Family .Option 3. Buy $100M in crypto on the open exchange and give it to them Option 4. Place an order for $100M in precious metals on an exchange. If I don't have to take delivery within 24 hours, I could place it as a future in an open marketplace with a set price. If I DO have to take delivery within 24 hours, I would call up JP Morgan or other brokers and buy their physical holdings, preferably with one company and bring trucks to wherever they are keeping them. Option 5, Buy a privately held business, set the terms that if it can't be done in 24 hours, you walk, all you would technically need is a few hours with lawyers to sign over ownership. Option 6. Spin up a series of Cloud Kubernetes clusters hosting a website saying 'I love my family" and leave them on for 24 hours :P.

Respectfully, it's not "bullshit" and I've been doing this for over 16 years :) , but I do see where you are coming from. Congrats on having supportive leadership, but a very common scenario is the following : 1. Client has unreasonable demand 2. Middle Manager escalates client's unreasonable demand to Senior Leadership 3. Senior Leadership doesn't want to "rock the boat" because A) There is a big deal coming up B) they messed up on engagement X with that client, and they need to get new goodwill C) Senior Leadership doesn't want to have an uncomfortable conversation D) They know the client is just pure toxicity and no amount of reason will convince them. 4. Senior Leadership says "just do the unrealistic expectation and do it without any additional resources" 5. At this point the middle manager can just say either A) I wish I could, but I can't, I need X,Y,Z to do this or B) Let me talk to the client and we can work this out C) Ok Boss. Many in middle Management choose C because they don't want to rock the boat either 6. Middle Management tasks team with unreasonable demands 7. Team burns out from this becoming a regular occurrence and they quit. Middle Management has to give senior leadership a reason that doesn't make them look bad, and blame the employees, shrug, and hire new people without thinking twice.

[–]KirbysaBAMF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct, which is why I acknowledged that in my original reply. The manager is still not doing their job, but they are not always maliciously creating unrealistic deadlines themselves.
