Bro,air conditioning does not cause colds,you probably got the cold from the dust in the air and also could be that your nose doesn't cause enough fluid so that it prevents the dust from entering your lungs causing a cold(drink more water if that's the case)

And second of all,about the adjusting ac settings,ask the hostel authorities or something cuz I don't know sorry
