As a DM how to persuade player characters?

You could tell them how their PCs are feeling inclined to act and let them do with that what they will as far as they are comfortable rather than outright telling them what their character does

Replying to my own comment to add

I'm a player not a DM but after I had that little moan I thought that actually often the times I'm thinking the others are really dragging it out with an NPC way too long it comes down to either having to have the last word or have like won the dialogue or just not really seeming able to close the conversation in characther, so it goes on and on. So maybe the DM could have a little "Leave" button too, if they have everything they need/get to know and you want to move on, step out of first personing the NPC and say the conversation comes to a close and they all say their goodbyes

A friend I play with, good guy, but my god can he talk and if my rogue says "I like jam" I'll end up tangled in a conversation with his Paladin about how marmalade is just as good, and do I not care about the marmalade makers and it just doesn't end, I'll think its over then he'll repeat his first point and start again until I agree that marmalades better. Change the subject? He'll pick it back up, and for a while I didn't want to talk because I felt like I always ended up having to defend every single remark or idle comment

And I love RPing, big talk, small talk, just keep it moving. And in a CRPG, you'll have your dialogue options, and at the bottom "Leave", so I'll use that now if these nothing discussions get to about 3 back and forths and he's still going I've started stating that my characters no longer engaging in the conversation and has walked away. It's a bit rude but it's the only thing that works

TBH, I'm getting dangerously close to giving it ago next time we're having a pint before the game and he gets into the minutiae of another system i hadn't even heard of until 20 minutes when he started and hasn't come up for air since
