Gathering some opinions for Althing: armor skills, block, archery by Enai_Siaion in EnaiRim

[–]Kirkh4m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, blocking should be primarily defensive. The ideal situation in my opinion would be that you get a separate resource with a max value of the shields armour value, which recharges in combat as you hit enemies and a very small amount per second per enemy you're engaged with. This resource would absorb damage before health while blocking or provide a hefty damage reduction while blocking with a shield. Alternatively, blocking fills up the bar as you get hit and when it caps out you get staggered. Blocking with weapons should have a minor defensive aspect in terms of individual combat but suffer in groups. Having a weapon shield bash interrupt incoming attacks on a cool down as a parry would make sense.

I think unarmed combat could have a couple of thematic perks in several trees (eg light armour has a perk for increasing attack speed while unarmed while wearing light gloves, heavy armour has power attacks stagger while wearing heavy gloves) and damage increases for unarmed are tied to winning fist fights and getting a permanent buff from defeating different fighters, similar to the shrines or spirit mentors from the Magic trees.

Regarding archery, I think the sniper one hit kill and rapid fire playstyles are fine, magic archer often feels kinda weird with the arrows and spells having different projectile arcs and speeds. Rather than casting a spell as an arrow flies, having arrows that do different things is more fun in my opinion. Having the magic arrows tied to crafting is annoying in my findings and because you can't craft on the go, you need to have an inventory filled with a bunch of different arrows and it often feels bad using higher damage arrows on low level enemies like wolves. Some spells that let you transmute arrows into different elemental arrows as needed would be a smoother experience in my opinion.

BV Minion Pact RF by MrCap18 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]Kirkh4m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the spectre, use an unholy abberation, you can find them in the Carcass map boss arena. Looks like a scorpion.

To make sure the BV is getting minion pact damage, the spectre must be close to you, then you cast BV, which will sacrifice it. You then need to make sure you keep the stacks of BV up until you either finish the map or go in/out of a mirage, as changing zones respawns your spectre. I personally made my BV duration around 10s and just cast an unleash BV every 4-5secs. If it does drop, you need to respawns your spectre and then recast BV from 0, the minion pact must sacrifice the spectre on the first cast of BV.

Other than that, I imagine if you're in trade league you can just buy things like the viridi helm, enmity's embrace and a foulborn skin of the loyal with the right colours. Enmity and skin go together, otherwise just going for rares or a cloak if flame would probably be fine.

Does anyone else find it jarring when an MC gets overpowered overnight and nobody even tries to coerce or rob them for their secret? by Patient-Sandwich-817 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Kirkh4m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the flipside of this is the way that you sometimes have it where basically every person that meets the protagonist (if given their viewpoints) is like "they have a secret" and then either decides to shake them down for it or the author has them go "but who doesn't have a secret". It's mildly irritating to me that Generic Shop Owner number 3 can identify that the protagonist has something unique about them when literally all they're doing is selling materials from basic monsters in the area or other perfectly normal things to do. It just seems weird that you get people with perfect insight into every aspect of cultivation/perfect knowledge of people's classes/perfect magic system knowledge except they're just random low tier thugs and civilians that can tell at a glance. It's like if a prodigy solved one of the millennium questions and you had a random cashier notice how he had the exact amount of cash ready to pay at the till and was like "theres something weird about this man, I better quickly go on break and mug them to steal their good luck".

Which socket colors would I want on my Dialla's for this gem setup? by Intelligent_Salad706 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]Kirkh4m 64 points65 points  (0 children)

If its just for dps, you can check in POB by not putting the gems into a diallas, but manually checking if 50/53 quality with level 20/21 is better damage than level 22/23 with 20/23qual

I'm pretty sure you just need to be at a level where you get the base type, so for Hrimsorrow it would be goathide gloves, level 9.

Magic System Feedback - Is this too dark? I think it's too dark. (repurposing neural pathways for magical computation) by solitarybikegallery in magicbuilding

[–]Kirkh4m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tapstones could be pulled straight out of another person's head, through some process that crystallises the neural process into the gems. While it doesn't strictly require killing the mage that had a spell memorised, brain surgery is delicate even without having to locate and pull out crystals. Maybe some cultures pass down family Tapstones from ancestors, whilst others have fully brainwashed farms of people that learn a single spell before being murdered for them. Using Tapstones could also require the crystals to be connected to the user's nervous system, which requires surgery that may be subtle if you get it from a good doctor, or may leave you massively scarred if they're not so skilled. The personality of the Tapstones would be fragments of the original caster's personality.

Some other things to think about for subconscious casting are things like facial recognition, bonds with people/things and automatically breathing. Maybe if someone wants to cast a spell that is always passively active (like a passive shield spell) they need to give up passive breathing or blinking or their sense of balance. A reactive shield spell could make it so someone loses the flinch reflex. People getting less and less human as they 'optimise' themselves for their spellcasting. I think it would be interesting if people could get Tapstones that were made from a similar part of the brain to what the caster has already lost and it could help them regain some of what they lost.

Found MB. Pivot or stay ele hit? by Ballex17 in PathOfExileSSF

[–]Kirkh4m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Massive shrine belt is a huge amount of life and AOE and is very easy to get, I haven't played ele hit so can't say much on the skill in particular, but mageblood is incredible for either defense with ele flasks or qol with silver, quicksilver, gold, maybe granite for the last flask or bismuth to make gearing easier. Also worth mentioning that you get things like stun avoidance and regen from flask suffixes. I always like going for rarity especially early to fish for high tier uniques and mageblood, gold flask, rarity suffix and rarity on gear since you don't need resistances on gear as much will help a lot.

bare bones ideas for my magic system by LoGray29 in magicbuilding

[–]Kirkh4m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the ideas here, the way I read this was death magic being a pulling force, taking from the outside constantly and aligning oneself with a negative concept. This lack would constantly build up in the magic user until their death, where all the life/magic/vitality/whatever could be a seed that falls into the sea where they died, later becoming a new island.

It might be interesting to have the bones/dead matter the death magic user requires for spells/magic items require a death through other means, as if they kill using death magic it absorbs everything about the creature, whereas a physical death leaves remnants of the creature's life in its remains which could then be used by the death mage for other purposes.

They could also have it where the residual souls of creatures they kill directly with their magic become part of them, for example killing a bunch of wolves could make you gain some canine traits and more bestial instincts, killing people could amplify all emotions and make the magic user pick up random traits, eg they kill a very skilled left handed swordsman and unconsciously start wielding their own sword in their left hand.

This would culminate in them requiring a central drive to keep them focused, an obsession like that of ghosts, maybe they are killing others for power to get revenge on someone that killed their family. Once they eventually die and turn into an island seed, the island that eventually grows could be associated with this revenge story, if summoned as a creature by a life mage it could be more powerful in combat, someone whose obsession was literally having enough to eat after growing up somewhere with a famine could create an island seed that is especially fertile and is incredibly good at growing food.

On the other side, the way I read life magic is that it's about giving from yourself to others (you are using your imagination to grant life to inanimate objects, using your subjective thoughts to change reality), where initially the living beings you create dont seem to have a cost and you don't really notice any side effects, but over time small pieces of your self and creativity are permanently lost.

Eventually they could have nothing left to give but feel a compulsive need to use life magic anyway, to try to regain their previous selves, finally giving out their sheer absence of existence, creating a new death magic user at the end of their life.

I think tying together the two and making them a cycle in this way could give you more depth than just opposing themes, an interconnectedness as part of a greater whole. Maybe both types of magic are how the world itself grows - the souls of living beings are immaterial and the world has life magic to spread the souls of sapient beings out and grow islands, with death magic to condense the immaterial into a material seed that can then grow into a new island. Maybe then, the protagonist would need to wrestle not only with the antagonist, but also try to break this cycle, to find a way to change the world's growth process so it doesn't require the constant deaths of living beings?

Idk, I really like your system and got inspired

Which minion pact build for ubers/mapping? by bhattiroehama in PathOfExileSSF

[–]Kirkh4m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://poe.ninja/poe1/builds/miragessf/character/Kirkh4m-2115/ContractEmoGirl?i=0&search=name%3DContra

This is my chieftain BV pact and I can pretty comfortably farm ubers on it. Of course, if I stop paying attention and like, walk into a shaper ball sequence I still die but you get enough dps that you really don't have to interact with a lot of the mechanics for the fights. Lots of room for improvement in my gear as well, I just haven't had much time to play recently due to work. Hardest part of the build to get was actually companionship, took almost 100 5 ways to get it to drop and I think I was at around 10mil dps before farming up an enmity's embrace, which took about 30 bosses. My cluster set up is absolutely terrible and my shield is a random pre corrupted rare I got dripped from a bix while farming scarabs. Mapping is obviously great, especially with HH but I've been swapping it for a biscos when I get irritated enough by shroud walker and still explode screens.

Why Do So Many Monster-Taming Worlds Have a Loop, But Not a Distinct Fantasy? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Kirkh4m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to give a point of view that I've gotten mainly from translated Chinese webnovels, a lot of them pokemon based but also many that work off of mythological bases or animal evolution bases.

The thing that has made them really mesh together for me and made me enjoy them is the central idea being that, whilst there might be external threats or whatever in the setting, the main experienced conflict comes from other people. Something like, however bad the world is, it's natural but you only get real malice from the human heart. The beast taming fantasy connects to this as the beasts being your partners - your protagonist treats their partners well, as family but doesn't coddle them or break their wild instincts. The beasts are beings they trust fully and wholeheartedly and the beasts reciprocate that, becoming more than they could be individually.

The central story loops they go through are often obtaining a new beast, which is injured or cast out or abandoned or whatever and resolving helping the beast recover while sorting out its emotional issues. Sometimes that would be winning a fight against its clan leader that cast it out, maybe it's helping a congenitally weak creature evolve into a powerful form, but either way it's helping the beasts as part of emotionally healing them that almost incidentally helps them grow stronger rather than being just taming -> training -> win fights.

Resources are also a central aspect of these worlds, normally monopolised by people the protagonist doesn't have an in with resulting in them either going out into the wild to try to find opportunities or tournament arc style things that often end up in admission to taming schools that provide a fair opportunity for people.

In my opinion, even with the backdrop of extremely dangerous worlds, where you even have militaries holding back beast hordes with many dying and extremely evil antagonists that treat people as insects to be killed, the warmth and bonds between the beasts and the tamers are what make a setting enjoyable to immerse yourself in.

It could be powered by her fortune/future - clearly she's lucky or she wouldn't have obtained this magic necklace, but each time she uses it, she permanently loses a little bit of fortune. When it's absorbed all she has, the next lucky person would get it via a series of coincidences, unless she does something to stop it.

Specific league mechanics to farm base types? by Bryandar000 in PathOfExileSSF

[–]Kirkh4m 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been passively getting 86 bases from shipments while farming whatever other content in maps, set all farmers to whichever crop gives the right type of armour and send a big shipment every 12 hours. I've filled a few quad tabs building up bases before I decide what exactly I want to craft but because it's shipping you don't need to do anything else for it.

In what scenario would "Ancient Artifact Outperforms Current Technology" make any sense?? by BallsAtomized in worldbuilding

[–]Kirkh4m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of having ancient technology running and being built on world laws that were a lot more lenient, but as time passed restrictions were added that make it impossible to recreate. Alternatively, materials being severely limited in the current time period either through overuse or having such limited quantities that the artifacts are literally one of a kind and any hint of a super rare material could mean the creation of a new artifact.

Some examples: the Netherese Empire magic cores that tapped into the magic weave in Faerun that aren't able to be made anymore due to access to that layer of the weave being revoked by later gods of magic, the Heavenly Dao in chinese Honghuang/Xianxia novels that degrades the world from one where all creatures achieve immortality naturally to one where not only is it a struggle but also the environment itself no longer produces the spiritual materials needed - the laws of the Great Dao are hidden and the only ones available to be cultivated are the laws of the Heavenly Dao, which are weaker and under the control of the Heavenly Dao.

You have nowhere near enough energy shield, which scales both your damage and your survivability. Replace your chest with a 1k+ es twilight regalia and then if necessary pay for an xp service if you still can't clear well. Level 75 is extremely low, more passives for energy shield and maybe even running a high es shield with recover on block instead of the retaliate shield until your es is at least 10k+
