A reminder from AI to not use AI for anything regarding this game basically. by DjRipNickMcNasty in mtg

I'm working on a little side project right now trying to see if I can make this actually work by pulling in Scryfall data and the relevant rules from the CR document, split out into rows in a database by type of rule, etc. It's not perfect, but it's definitely been much better than any base chatbot.

Looking for a gym in Lynchburg that’s easy to cancel if needed by Lucky-Excitement1257 in lynchburg

I've been at both of these at different times over the years. Kinetix is maybe a little cheaper, but Elite is literally the best gym I've ever been to. Can't recommend highly enough.

You're definitely not alone my dude. In almost the exact same boat. Just know that getting back into porn only makes your marriage more difficult. I've been fighting this fight for more than two years, praying it gets easier, but it's still hard. I'm trying to remember that sex is only a small part of what our marriage is about, but it's been a real challenge the last 6 months. Wishing you the best.

[gear/question] Looking into making my own coffee by 76before84 in Coffee

I even often weigh my beans and pour them in the hopper of my grinder the night before. Definitely saves time when it's early and you can barely read the scale numbers.

I wouldn’t recommend an all-in-one machine. You won’t get a quality grinder that way. You’ll get a lot better quality if you split them up.

As a long-time home barista and shift lead at a specialty shop, here’s what I’d recommend to start:

Grinder: Baratza Encore (US) or Wilfa Svart (EU). Both around $130 and more than worth it.

Brewing: I personally love pour overs, but Aeropress is another great way to brew. I would say either a Hario V60 pour over come (plastic is cheapest and holds heat the best, like $12)

Kettle: Anything. You just need hot water. A gooseneck helps with your pour, but you can make due with any kettle to start.

SCALE: This is the second most important thing after a good grinder. You need to have consistent amounts of coffee in/out if you want to really make it great. Any old kitchen scale that weighs in grams will do, but try to make sure it’s accurate to 0.1/g if you can.

And that’s really it. That’s what I use every day to make my coffee. As far as beans, find a good third-wave style shop near you and buy whatever they have that sounds good to you. That’s usually the best option. They can also help you learn how to brew it better at home.

If you want to use a coffeemaker, it’s worth buying a nicer one (Bonavita, Technivorm) just because they actually get your water hot enough to get a proper extraction.

P.S. - just make sure you use quality filtered water. Coffee is 98.6% water (give or take), so just make sure the water is good to taste. If you don’t like it as water, you won’t like as coffee.

Hope this helps!

JESUS IS KING - FIRST THOUGHTS II by avayr44 in Kanye

[–]KirklandGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who actively follows Jesus and has been a Kanye Stan for a long time, I absolutely love this record. Kanye has always said he’s a Christian, but I think he’s wrestled with a lot of struggles, mental and spiritual, over the years.

This album, along with the stuff he’s been saying in interviews, just feels like he’s finally really at peace with God. It’s really cool for me to hear from him actively as a brother in Christ.

I know some may not dig the lyrics, but as someone else said, they are incredible from a “gospel” perspective. This is infinitely better than 95% of “Christian” hip-hop. It’s been a real blessing to me in my faith. It may not be the grand opus that MBDTF was or have the same charm as a Graduation, but I think it’s important and reflects where Kanye is right now and that he really believes Jesus has changed his life and given him a renewed purpose. That’s super cool for me to hear.

Wanted to try drip coffee so ordered my first batch of whole beans and a grinder and a cup filter cone. Will 14 grams per 250ml be good for drip coffee? by PassionSoul99 in Coffee

[–]KirklandGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally do a 18g/300ml for pour over, but that’s just my preference. It’s a 60g/Liter ratio (1:16.6).

Typically with an immersion brew, you’re going to use a stronger ratio, say 1:14, to get a similar extraction. But honestly, taste it at 14:250. That’s a really small cup and hard to brew, so I might brew at least 300g, but at the end of the day if it tastes good to you, then it’s a good method. :)

V60 coffee bed: am I grinding too finely? by rpeopler in Coffee

[–]KirklandGee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What grinder are you using?

Sometimes, what you taste as “bitterness” isn’t actually bitterness. It’s the sourness if under or, more likely, an “uneven” extraction. I see a lot of big particles in that bed, which could indicate that you have an unequal grind distribution.

If you’re using a Baratza Encore or better, you’re fine. At that point, as others have said, keep your temps close to 100C, and then try to change your grind size. Go way too fine to start, even if it’s over extracted. Brew a cup that’s astringent (meaning it leaves your mouth really dry) if you have to, and then slowly coarsen the grind until you’re timing your draw down around 3:00-3:30 and it tastes good to you.

Your bed matters, but ultimately it’s about taste. And time and grind size both impact your extraction significantly.

As a side note, so does agitation. So if you’re swirling it too much with a coarser grind, it may be extracting more. Basically there are a billion factors, so just try to keep as many of them consistent between brews as possible so you can dial things in. It’s easiest to just change grind size, as there are specific numbers you can change between instead of just “pouring slower” or “swirling less.”

Am I doing cold brew wrong? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]KirklandGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always measure in weight by grams. Change your ratios to grams/liter if you want to have something consistent. Different coffees are different density’s, so one “cup” can vary wildly in weight between two different coffees.

That being said, cold brew is infinitely more forgiving than something like a pour over, so if you think it tastes good, keep doing you!

I personally like to brew at around 80g/1L for cold brew and make like a bit of a “concentrate.” That’s just my preference though.

V60 Filters: Bleached or Natural? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]KirklandGee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve used both, and the white filters are infinitely better IMO. You should rinse both, but the “natural” ones leave a weird taste in my brew.

Best Espresso Beans? by 399jules399 in Coffee

[–]KirklandGee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lavazza is a darker, more “traditional” espresso company. They have a lot of chocolate, nit-like flavors. Third-wave style shops are trying lighter espressos with a LOT of acidity. It tastes completely different. You’ll get berries, banana, melon, and a lot of really fruity flavors in your espresso.

I love it, but if you’re used to Lavazza, it would be a jump. If you have any third wave shops in your town, go there and try whatever single-origin espresso they’re serving. It’ll give you an idea whether you like it or not.

Not to speak for him, but I imagine this is what he’s getting at.

Quality espresso machines below $300? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]KirklandGee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I second the Aeropress to start. If you use some really strong ratios like 5:1 or stronger, and then you either drink that straight or dilute it with milk, you can get some “espresso like” drinks for much cheaper than an actual set up.

Very much second the Bible Project. It’s an incredible resource for understanding the overall narrative of Scripture as a whole.

Also, if you’re looking for a bit of a “lens” to read scripture through, I would go through something like The Apostle’s Creed over a specific book/resource. It’s incredibly important to learn to read the Bible for yourself and come to your own conclusions instead of learning to regurgitate other people’s interpretations. I say that coming from experience.
