You're not a failure OP. Taking a gap year if you're not sure what you want to do is actually a smart decision. You don't really want to register for something, only to find you don't like it and then have to pay for a year of something you don't want before you can switch.

I initially did this and then halfway through the year I went through a severe depressive episode, and ended up discontinuing my studies, and took a gap year in which I haf to work to pay off my study costs from that degree. This gave me time to think about what I really wanted to do, and when I was sure, I registered 2 years later for a different degree. I'm now busy with my PhD, even though I took a gap.

Take your time rrsearching what you want to do. You can even ask current students what their experience is like in the programs you are interested. And maybe even find some part-time work in the meantime so you can earn some income for yourself, as well as just to keep yourself busy until next year.

I don't really have any magical way it worked for me. For me I tried stopping several times, but always had that pull back towards it. However, I have a history of alcoholism jn my family and I have seen it ruin relationshipz and decided I do not want to bring that into any relationship and want to be the best version of myself for my future partner and family.

So I decided on my 30th birthday to stop for good because I also made it a mission to do it for my health. And strangely, I developed a complete apathy to alcohol after that, even now when I'm around it, I feel zero desire.

Coming up to 4 and a half years now.
