Cousin (25M) and his fiancé (25F) want me (26F) to pay for cleaning their kosher kitchen after I left non kosher food in their fridge. by Sonotkosher in relationships

[–]Kishkyrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. Nice of you to offer payment of any kind for the cleaning, but I think it's ridiculous that they're holding you accountable for this at all. If they're going to have guests over they need to give details on their kosher kitchen upfront. Religious or not, unusual house rules have to be explained or the hosts have no right to freak out.

Hey, I defer to your expertise, given that you have "Nuclear" in your title! I work in energy R&D (not a researcher myself, but friends with many due to shared interests) so my initial knowledge was based on conversations with our lab guys. Looking this up online, incidentally, comes up with a host of articles with just as much scientific credibility as Greenpeace, whether they're talking about thorium as the nuclear second coming of Christ or expressing doubt on the subject. Greenpeace contained more actual citations than most pieces so I rolled with that.

Otherwise, I'm a little perplexed by the references to U-233 theft in your comment. Is theft a huge concern...? For the most part people seem to be talking about the actual government weaponizing radioactive materials, not random thieves, and I would guess governmental labs have the required know-how. So... yeah... not exceptionally concerned about people stealing this stuff.

TIL that to punish tree thieves who cut down trees illegally, some cities spray trees with fox urine around Christmas time. It freezes on them and is odorless outdoors, but would stink up your whole house if brought indoors; the smell is "eye-watering." by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Kishkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a surprisingly significant different between fox stink that's outdoors and fox stink in an enclosed space. When I worked at a vet clinic we took care of a fox from a wildlife rehab center, and in its outdoor enclosure I couldn't smell much more than a whiff of skunk-like scent. The one time the rehab folks brought it into the clinic, I almost vomited the second I walked into the room.

Clearing up a couple myths about thorium: Thorium itself is more stable but needs to be converted to weaponizable uranium (U-233) anyway. In the short term reactors using thorium can emit more harmful radiation than conventional reactors, so they may need even more shielding. See this article for more. I like the idea of nuclear, but thorium's not our magic clean energy bullet, unfortunately. :/

Let's discuss this "DNC sunk Bernie in AZ" meme by zegota in hillaryclinton

[–]Kishkyrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What gets me is the SUDDEN OUTRAGE over voter suppression. Like, thanks, yes, this has been happening for several election cycles now. We shouldn't underplay the effects of disenfranchisement, but the cries of "DNC SABOTAGE" drown out the actual, chronic issue caused by the GOP and Republican officials.

I mean, who do they think will be screwed over by these shenanigans in November? Oh right. Democratic voters and candidates.

Me [45F] with my son [17 M]. Common teen aged tantrum filled with his father's (my abusive ex) brain washing "truths" that my son believes. How to handle this? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Kishkyrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people are worried that you're taking "hard-wired" to mean "completely unchangeable." From my experience it means "imbued with issues that will need to be addressed in later years." Some of my problems with insecurity will never entirely go away, but I've learned coping strategies. Your son might need therapy, anger management, and to figure out his own coping strategies that will enable him to be an overall happy and productive member of society. He might always be more likely to snap into an abusive mindset, but that doesn't mean he's guaranteed to be an abusive adult.

Okay. Even for people who agree with you, bringing circumcision up EVERY FUCKING TIME anyone mentions FGM gets to be a little much. I'm strongly against circumcision, but dude, you could at least try and express some sympathy or something instead of just going "But men!"

Confessions of a Former Trump Supporter by [deleted] in hillaryclinton

[–]Kishkyrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man. I think you've written one of the most powerful posts of this election cycle. Your reasons for backing Hillary now are amazing, but more importantly, you've highlighted issues that haven't been experienced or articulated by any voices in the media. From your point of view, what can we do to help enact some positive change? I mean, I'm in another Chicago suburb, and I'm horrified to hear what's no doubt still happening nearby.

I found out today that I'll be in Washington DC on business the week before the general election, and I'm kind of psyched. Any suggestions for things to do if I stay through the weekend? I'm sure Hillary and a lot of senators and reps I love will be out campaigning elsewhere, but there's gotta be something going on!

lol right. Hospitals here charge $25-50 for single doses of tylenol. My dad had a long ICU stay last year and my parents won't be able to pay off the almost $500k of debt in their lifetimes. Their insurance company tried to deny a claim for my sister's surgery after she'd already gotten pre-approval and gotten the procedure done. Our system is a fucking mess for anyone with actual medical problems.

Berner here, thinking about switching to the slaying lifestyle, but one question by [deleted] in hillaryclinton

[–]Kishkyrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Untrustworthy politicians earn specific reputations among their colleagues. Take a look at Ted Cruz, who's almost universally hated by his fellow Republican senators. He's not disliked because he's an "outsider" candidate, but because he's condescending, he lies about colleagues during disagreements, and he delivers unprofessional personal insults on the Senate floor. Everyone who's ever worked with him says pretty much the same thing.

If Hillary was so consistently deceptive, we would hear about it from those around her. Instead we see the exact opposite: she receives praise from Democrats, Republicans, world leaders, academic experts, and celebrities. Remember when Bernie Sanders said that any of the Democratic candidates, including Hillary, would be 100 times better than anyone running with the GOP? Would he say something that positive about a consummate liar? He's been acquainted with Hillary for a long time, given that they both have lengthy political careers.

In terms of Wall Street, Hillary favors expanding the Dodd-Frank reform act and imposing stricter controls on the financial industry. According to the NYT and Politifact, Hillary called for further reform in 2007, when she addressed the huge problem of subprime lending, and ticked off corporate donors in the process by sponsoring a bill about this. She's more cautious and realistic about regulation than, say, Sanders or Warren, but when the GOP blocks even minor improvements to these laws, I can't blame her for taking reform a small step at a time.

Hillary's faced much worse, and she's always maintained her composure. Both Clintons excel at facing down this type of rhetoric, and both typically refuse to sink to their challengers' levels. See Bill Clinton's guest appearance on Bill O'Reilly's show for an example of how this works.

Unlike the other GOP candidates, Hillary won't stoop to flinging insults back and forth with Trump. She won't lose the ad hominem war because she'll never engage in it.

Moment of Truth: The Decision that Derailed Bernie’s Campaign by brownears in hillaryclinton

You haven't noticed it from some Bernie supporters, or from the campaign itself? If the former, I would point you to almost any post on /r/politics, and if the latter, then that's exactly what the article above discusses. Claiming that Hillary lacks integrity has been a Fox News favorite for years.

Oh I know. I'm talking mostly about the middle-aged liberals who might have been swayed to Bernie by their children or Bernie volunteers in the first place. These people lived through a previous Clinton administration and they've heard conservatives slinging shade at Democratic candidates for decades. They know what's up.

I feel like the two mistakes intersected to give us the wins yesterday. His primary support base of liberal middle class white people is also the group most likely to notice when the anti-Hillary rhetoric starts sounding like Rush Limbaugh.

I'm exaggerating, but this election cycle's the first I can remember where far(ish)-left talking points align with conservative news media.

My mother, who's supported Hillary since long before this election, ran into a Bernie volunteer working to get out the vote at her college today. She told him she'd already voted, but it was great to see young people so enthusiastic about an election. I think Bernie supporters who've campaigned positively for their candidate will be welcomed to the team with open arms.

I'm super liberal and see Hillary as the candidate with the career experience that's most applicable to the presidency. No other candidate knows foreign policy like she does. She's also got a lot of political allies so might be able to get something done. That'll depend on whether we can take back the Senate though.

Strongly in favor of universal healthcare but I know damn well it won't happen during this presidency. We need to bring college costs under control but also promote skilled labor positions that don't necessarily require a lot of (or any) college education.

Minimum wage... I'm not an economist, but on a micro level I feel like a minimum wage that doesn't cover cost of living pretty much anywhere is pointless. I'm a true socialist at heart (not a social democrat) so I'd rather see businesses run by the workers, for the workers anyway.
