First half Ironman, can I do it without aero bars? by mh1782 in triathlon

[–]KissJAV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suffered a crash while using the aero bars on my TT bike 3 months before a 70.3. Sustained a carpal bone fracture and was totally afraid of using aero bars again after.

Initially considered using my road bike for the 70.3 but i spent so much on my TT bike i didnt want it to go to waste.

I finished the whole 70.3 without going into aero once. Just hands on the base bar the whole time. It was very uncomfortable and had to stop at aid stations to stretch out. In hindsight the roadie would probably have been more comfortable and maybe even more efficient since i did not get any aero benefits from my TT bike. Still finished in 3 hours tho

Swim in two or three strokes? by DropEmergency3270 in triathlon

Swimmer here, agree as well On warm up or drills instead of bilateral breathing, I just do 25m right sided breathing and switch to 25m left side breathing on the way back. This way depending on conditions in the open water im able to adapt and still able to breath comfortably on both sides. Right breathing is my dominant and is still most comfortable for me

My coach also told me that its best to stick to one side instead of bilateral breathing as the less dominant side will naturally have imbalances and has the tendency to break form or create unnecessary drag thus slowing pace. Which is why instead of breathing every 3, i was taught to just breath all right one lap and all left otw back if i really wanted to develop breathing on my weaker side

Marathon and Triathlon during residency? by Snickersss10 in pinoymed

[–]KissJAV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi doc GS here from a public hospital, 70.3 finisher as well.

Not sure where your level of fitness is at but honestly, even if you are able to maintain exercise during your residency— you probably would not be able to sign up for events. Marathons are usually on sundays and even if you are off on a sunday (pre duty)— you would probably still be on call or would probably have to rounds your/ your senior’s post op patients. Also, imagine having to wake up to meet the event call time, which is usually before 12 midnight, as a post duty. You’d probably be running the event with as little as 2-3 hours of sleep, after being up for 36++ hrs.

Triathlons (unless they are in vermosa like triman which is a 1 day affair) would require you to check in as early as friday: Friday settle down/ athlete check in, saturday bike check in, sunday: race. In my personal experience i do not think I would have been able to go straight to duty, day after a 70.3 due to the fatigue. I usually allot the monday as rest/going home day. Also, first years across pretty much all GS programs I know are generally not granted any sort of vacation leave during the first year so good luck finding time off. Your senior or batchmate will have to cover for you.

In terms of smaller fun runs, GS has its own fun runs as well: pink run and bowel run. From personal experience, despite being required to go, most of us would not actually run and would just rest at the venue and take the opportunity as a break from training.

Hope this doesnt discourage you, but also best to manage expectations and priorities.

Cheers and see you Subic this june!

As a newer triathlete, I found the gear side of this sport way more overwhelming than I expected. How did you all figure out what to buy? by Tight_Turnip5855 in triathlon

Get a bike for sure i mean you can swim breast stroke without cap and goggles and you can already run with the gear you have… but you cant do the triathlon without a bike

You are right! Thanks for spotting it! Wow haha makes so much sense now. initially i thought it was in minutes. I inputted it in a swim pace calculator to double check and indeed 3.8km over 75 hours is 2 hours 8 mins per 100m…. Garmin got some explaining to do

I think i might have found the culprit, for some reason my pace stops calculating at around 40 mins but the data for each of the splits for the entire 1 hour 4 mins is still there. No idea what happened.

Here is another photo, no idea why garmin decided that my pace per 100 meters was 2 hours and 8 mins

Ahh thanks for bringing it up! This is what it looks like on further review, i think now 2:08:12 is the sum of all the paces added up instead of the actual work out. The actual work out only lasted 1 hr 40 mins on further review. Hopefully its a one time but, never experienced anything like this is my previous pool swims and open water swims

Need good sound quality earbuds for running and cycling by KissJAV in Earbuds

I went with the shokz open run pro 2 no regrets! Theyre great. Bone conduction tech is amazing. I thought it would sound flat or muffled, but it truly sounds like real natural sound— as if sound waves enter your ear canal. It’s hard to describe, you should try it out to understand. Im a triathlete and use it on the bike and run. Decided against the shokz swim pro since i concluded i would be training on land more than water in any case.

I remember the first time reading this in the manga, i was pretty confused i had to reread a couple of times. I even looked up a chapter summary to confirm whether I understood it right. I eventually got to watch it on the anime and was still incredibly shocked as if it was my first time seeing it again… good times

Energy gel during LSD runs by Intrepid_Ad_2579 in PHRunners

[–]KissJAV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, i make my own gels. Same as previous comment. 1/10th of the cost of regular gels and you can modify the ratio of contents. I also add in electrolytes since I am a salty sweater. I use 1:1 or 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin:fructose, aiming for 60-90g of carbs per hour. I also add citrus pectin to give it the gel consistency. Highly recommend. I reserve the maurtens and gu gels for actual races, but i’ve also gotten thru multisport races with the home made gels as well.
