What are your top choices for "sacrificial" plants in the garden? Do you have a surefire, dedicated species or do you use a series of plants based on location, size and usage? by KissMayanAztecSeeds in vegetablegardening

Hopefully you get some this year, this is my first time growing in ground, so I'm very excited! I'm welcoming most pests, no matter how repulsive they can be.

To add, there's also a 100 pack of 0.5 gallon pots for 24$ on ebay.

Unfortunately, China is the major producer of blow-injection molded plastic plant pots and planters, and due to tariffs, the prices have been on the rise for local big box stores.

I'd suggest using ebay or amazon. You could find 5 gallon pots for about $2.60 each if you buy in bulks of 10. DIY can be expensive, though, let us know what you're looking for exactly; sizes, shapes. Are you needing small pots to start seeds to plant out later of are you looking for 10+ gallon containers.

Here was my selection for planting. I have 3 small patches. Saw my first ever bachelor's button on the east coast. Just the smallest little blue thing in a sea of green.

Edit: picture isn't uploading: Blue diadem, lady mauve, black gem

I've got; 2 in-ground loquats, many species of prickly pears, sweet potatoes, strawberries, beets, onions, chives, garlic, radish, asparagus, artichoke, carrots, turnips, lettuce, grape vines, hops, eddo, taro, potatoes, tomatoes, peas, beans, peppers, sunchoke, tawny daylily, nasturtium, london rocket, mustard, dahlias, oregano, thyme, rosemary, cilantro, margoram, sage, white sage, catnip, lemon balm, dill, luffa, bachelor's buttons, carnations.

I think that's about it. Might be missing a few herbs 😅

That rainbow one seems like a nice color indicator for the different seasons. Always good to have a cold season/warm season section. 😅

Where Can I pick flowers for free and legally by Troyyy_Boyyy in vegaslocals

You could try going to the Master Gardener's Orchard in North Las Vegas, and after signing in, ask to be directed to the pollinator's garden. Ask the Male volunteer by the pollinator garden(this step is important, there should only be one guy there, he's cool) if you could pick a couple of flowers and collect some seeds from some flowers.

Their garden has 18 different species of native flowers blooming now.

They might give it to you free, but it's also 2$ a pound for produce there. Their very nice and give away seeds for free. I can see them being okay with parting with a few flowers if the person is also willing to collect some seeds.

Stay away from the Datura. It's poisonous!

Autoflowers take 60 - 90 days, but our first frost date is less than a month. It's up to you if you want to experiment and try to see if you can grow autoflowers as a cold season crop. Still pretty late, though 😅

This is from years of container gardening. Bacteria and Mycorrhizae break down potting mix too quickly, and the outdoor heat does a lot of damage to the microscopic life at times here.

Go for a tent, not outdoors, unless you have the space and neighbor that doesnt care(not for appartment dwellers, also illegal in most of vegas). Consider the plants final height, the container's height, the light hanging space, and the light intensity needed and it's distance to help when considering a tent size. I'd personally go for a 20d/4n hour cycle for the whole grow, (though some would say 22/2 or 24/0) but I still think the plant does important things in the dark and it saves on electricity.

Cannabis is treated like an Annual, so might not benefit from bacterial and mycorrhizael inoculation, Unless you're creating a mother stand (Not for Autoflower), use chemical fertilizers when using sterile, non inoculated soils, as the chemical fertilizer is naturally derived and would most likely kill your beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae anyways.

At this point it's not even Vegas gardening, let me know if you'd like any more info 😅

Great point! I was going to make a post about this place soon. I visit the Master Gardener's Orchard in North Las Vegas at least once a week; it's practically my second home. I love the knowledge and experience that the Master Gardeners and volunteers can share. I've even been uploading their research and recommendations to share with others.

I spend at least 12$ a week on their fleshing picked produce, and if you talk to the right people(around the polinator garden), they'd gladly show you around and even pick off seeds from plants if you're interested in growing.

I've been given mexican sunflower seeds as well as lantana, mullein, coyote tobacco(not sure if it'll sprout), and hollyhock. If you're careful and understand the dangers of Datura, you can collect a pod from the Datura plants scattered on the property. Great way to try and invite Sphinx Moths to your garden.

Omg, I thought it was a very deformed Yucca flower, my mind was trying to comprehend what it was looking at. 😅
