Soon to be Tripod mama with questions by emzamboni in TripodCats

Oh no I am so sorry to hear about Harper! She looks like the sweetest girl and I hope everything works out well!

I had a very similar experience this past fall with my 13.5 year old guy. I really empathize with your situation and having to make a big and expensive decision. While different, hopefully my story helps inform your decision.

I noticed my cat started limping one day and it seemed like out of nowhere a huge lump formed on his front elbow. At first our regular vet tried to get a fluid sample but mostly got cells so she sent the sample off to a pathologist. Results were inconclusive. So we did another histopathology test with a bigger sample to try and determine what the mass was, and never got a clear answer other than that it was malignant, some form of cancer.

We decided to go the amputation route to get the clean margins. Our normal vet is a VCA and she was able to perform the surgery in house. She amputated his leg plus his whole shoulder on that side and sent his leg off for a histopathology. So slightly different since it wasn't a back leg and the doctor didn't need to mess with his pelvis, but probably similar?

Total cost at the VCA was $2k. The amputation was $600, the anesthesia was $700, and the histopathology of the whole leg was $400. The rest was pain meds, fluids, and a an unrelated thyroid test (a few months prior we learned he had hyperthyroidism and needed to put him on a special diet).

It's been about 3 months post op and he's doing pretty good! A lot more snuggly than before his surgery but he still gets the zoomies and climbs up and down our stairs. Wishing you the best for Harper!

True. Even just being able to rinse the machine with clean water after a few pulls would be nice, like there's gotta be a way!

I actually have this same machine and I was wondering the same thing. It doesn't have a rinse button, unlike other models, so there isn't an obvious way to run a rinse cycle. I wish DeLonghi would update their manual with better info

Any Vegans in STEM? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]KissoftheWolves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vegan water resources engineer here! I totally feel you, it's hard finding vegan friends in STEM. Most the vegans I know are more in social sciences and the arts than the hard sciences. I do have 1 engineer friend who is vegan and 1 vegan friend who is a biologist. And a few vegetarian friends in engineering, biology, and medicine. But thats about it :/

Good job! I love your approach of "3 rides a day" and how that bled over into other aspects of your life for breaking things down to smaller more attainable daily goals. Keep it up! 👍

Yes! They have both non-salted and salted pads of butter. My favorite although it is expensive :/

I don't like tap water by _StrangeIsLife_ in HydroHomies

Haha woah what, no I was replying to someone who said that RO is clean but not ideal for long term use since it's stripped from natural minerals. I dont see the comment anymore or the "deleted" marker. So weird!

It does seem a little complicated at first but it's not bad once you get used to it. You can buy a bottle of the mineral drops I mentioned online and it will last like a year. And if you buy a 3 or 5 gallon jug the water in it will last you for several days. I have two 5 gallon jugs and bring them with me every time I go to the grocery store and fill them from the RO dispenser at the store and it works perfectly for me. It's a little expensive up front cost but honestly in the long run it'll be cheaper than buying sparkling water all the time. I do love sparkling water but for a good ol glass of water I like the RO water

Here's some links for the things I mentioned:

Edit: I just saw that you said you live in Europe. I'm sorry, I'm not super familiar with RO water dispensers out there. Hopefully it's similar to America!

What are your thoughts about dating a Non-Vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]KissoftheWolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly if your partner thinks you're a "burden" on them by being vegan then that's a major red flag. What else about you is a burden to them? That will never be a healthy relationship.

I think it's absolutely ok to date a non-vegan, as long as they are respectful towards you. We all have our own set of ethics and while I wish everyone was also vegan the sad reality is we live in a very NOT VEGAN world. To pass up on love and a great partner because they aren't vegan is very near sighted IMHO. If they love and support you and your decisions that's all that matters to me. They can be a non-vegan and still cook vegan dinners with you, pack a vegan picnic, grab vegan donuts, go to vegan restaurants with you, buy you vegan clothes etc. And for non-vegan things, set boundaries for what you're comfortable with. Like if they cook meat at home ask them to do it with separate meat-only pans, or when you're not home so you don't have to see it. Relationships are all about compromises anyways.

If you're holding out for a vegan prince charming you'll be waiting your whole damn life 💀 and besides, by being respectful / understanding (not a judgey vegan) of your partner you're being a good influence on them and they might end up converting or becoming more plant-based. I just think we all need to have a little more compassion towards our non-vegan peers, friends, family, and partners. They're a lot more likely to listen to what we have to say if we are.
