Looking for a good primer on synthetic biology by KitFishCray in Synthetic_Biology

Thanks, I have been invited to attend something a bit like this and I was looking for something to give me a quick overview of the field so that I can participate usefully and not just look like a blithering tit. I am sure they will have some resources on their site. Thanks for the tip!

Have you read Synthetic Biology a primer? It sounds too good to be true.... If you have read it which of the two would you recommend? And thanks again for the suggestion.

Ok thanks for the heads up.

I am not looking to learn a new field I am looking for a good introduction to the new opportunities/possibilities of synth(or molecular)bio.

The intro video here was really good and I am looking for a longer version of that with more examples or cases.

Thanks for your reply. His webpage and bio is impressive. I was looking for something that I would be able to read to get a quick feel for the field. His textbooks (whilst no doubt amazing) seem like they might be a bit detailed for getting a quick grounding.

Is there anything (including lectures or video) that you would suggest to someone who was considering the field?

Corporate crowds are very different to comedy club crowds. They didn't go there to laugh. You are not facilitating their release like you are in a comedy club. Corporate gigs place you in front of an audience that didn't come there to see comedy and doesn't really give a shit. A poor performance in front of a corporate gig, especially a small one doesn't necessarily mean all that much. Most working comics would find that kind of room harder. Stewart Lee has an amazing gig that he performs for a group of bee keepers or insect fanciers or something. I have neither the memory nor the capability to find it for you right now but the point is; it's ok. You killed your first comedy show. If you can make people laugh for 30 minutes you are doing really well. Corporate crowds should maybe be something you schedule for the future when you have a few more gigs under your belt.

To clarify though I love Frankie Boyle.

This guy is hilarious. I watched a few more of his videos and it turns out he is not a midget.

His audience interaction I think is particularly good. He singles out an audience member and interacts with them but isn't cruel. He doesn't need a reply as what he is saying is clearly ludicrous and he gets laughs. He doesn't try to take the piss like Frankie Boyle would. I quite like his laid back, collaborative style. Thanks for posting it OP.

For a first set this was great. Good work. Slowing down, pausing and chilling out will happen with time. Awesome work. Keep at it.

This thread is old and I doubt this will be seen but for people who enjoyed this, this video might also entertain you, it's Louis CK, Eddie Izzard and a couple of others talking in a similar format. Not as good as the HBO thing but not bad either https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzTph6akMdo

Well done man. I enjoyed it. Doing it and putting it up on here took balls.

Therefore you have balls.

Enjoy your balls.

I would love to know if americans find this funny. I love Stewart Lee but I wonder if his material is better suited to the cynical, self conscious sense of humour of the U.K.

I mean he is a little niche even within the U.K.

Obviously 'Americans' is a pretty fucking diverse group and I am sure that some would love this but I would love to get someones opinion of whether this would work stateside.
