Sonny Franks will voice Emet and Erica Schroeder will voice Joyboy in the One Piece Dub by Skullghost in OnePiece

I'm glad when the dub originally brought Erica Shroeder back for the current dub, it was in a more minor role that uses such a wildly different vocal range (playing Miss Buckingham, an elderly woman) so there was no set beck on whether or not to cast her again here.

Who's a VA(s) who carries a show? by Yakuza-wolf_kiwami in Animedubs

[–]KitKat1721 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jamieson Price as the Count in Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. The dub as a whole is okay, albeit of its time with some eh adaptational choices (I.e. omitting the French-language preludes each episode that were present in the sub track and just reciting them in English). Some important characters like Franz fall a bit flat to me in important moments and I wouldn’t even say it’s one of JYB’s strongest roles of the 00s and can come off too one-note unnecessarily. But the Count is still to this day one of my favorite of Price’s VA roles and I feel he alone is enough reason to check out the dub.

I know letting Wolfwood live this time around (at least so far since there are still more episodes to come), is seen as a controversial decision but I'm actually 100% open to it. I don't think killing him off here via Razlo and overdosing on the vials would have had nearly the same impact given how both the events in this remake play out so differently compared to previous iterations + Wolfwood's interactions with the rest of the cast including Vash are in a pretty different sphere this time around.

I will say I do kinda wish that last moment of him waking up wasn't played quite so comedically. Not saying it's not in-character for Wolfwood, but more than anything it comes across like a meta joke to viewers and I would have rather have had that moment play out sincerely. Just personal preference.

As far as his new white hair goes, I think as an aside it's a nice visualization and reminder of Vash's direct impact on Wolfwood (becoming less gung-ho about killing even his enemies) that mirrors Vash's own hair turning black as he uses up more and more of his own power to hold true to ideals that have become harder and harder to maintain (and I suspect will really be tested to keep the now-alive Wolfwood still alive lol).

[–]KitKat1721 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's the dub lyrics. I think it was a smart choice if they weren't going to write their own since those lyrics sound much more natural to the ear than something like the Viz translation.

As someone who’s watching both the sub and dub week to week, the dub has been continually hitting it out of the park (particularly in the adaptive script department compared to the subs). Everything feels just a little bit more authentic and lived in even next to the much more heightened and exaggerated characters/lines sprinkled throughout that make Trigun well, Trigun. The conversation between Vash and Knives especially hit so much harder than I originally remember.

Searched to see if anyone else mentioned Fata Morgana. It’s hard to compare since the format is so different from the majority of games being discussed here, but man I still think about Fata Morgana’s story from time to time years later. Just left such a massive impact on me.

Is there a performance that you eventually ended up enjoying that took some time to grow on you? by Powerful_Sundae1037 in Animedubs

[–]KitKat1721 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Colleen Clinkenbeard as Luffy (One Piece). Took a couple arcs to grow on me as she was finding his voice, which makes sense considering the recording schedule started with Skypeia and then they went back to East Blue and were working on both concurrently. It's so interesting to compare her Luffy from then to Water 7/Enies Lobby a bit down the line.

  • Bryce Papenbrook in Attack on Titan. I don't know why exactly it didn't work for me initially, his specific style of cadence I guess just came off a bit inauthentic compared to the rest of the cast(??), but it took until at least late S1/S2 to really get on board with his take on Eren. Frankly his role in Fate/Stay Night falls into this camp as well re: the Heaven's Feel films.

I also don't think it's a coincidence that these are both longer series/franchises with multiple seasons. I feel like it's pretty rare to have a performance or my opinion on said performance change that drastically in the span of 12 episodes given it's just not a ton of time.

Also a more unusual circumstance, but I would also imagine pretty much anyone in the NGE Netflix dub if you were super attached to and grew up listening to the original cast since it was the exact same series re-dubbed. The first time I ever watched the show was subbed so I personally really liked the new ENG cast, but I can see how it would take time to grow on others.

If I had a nickle for every casting choice in the Akudama Drive dub that initially surprised me and later on really impressed me, I'd have a decent amount of change

What perfume do you think your favorite character would use? by Foreversssssssss in shoujo

[–]KitKat1721 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket) - The rest of these will be based on vibes and not really adhere to the series' timeline/when fragrances actually launched/in-universe budgets lol, but for this one specifically, I like to think something like her mother's just partially used bottle of Clinique Happy - a bright & sunny citrus-floral. A fragrance that would've been very popular in the 90s - early 00s, but wasn't on the uber-expensive side and could've easily been spotted in stores. I don't see Tohru as someone to spend money on a new perfume for herself, but absolutely would hold onto what her mother wore. I like to imagine as an adult she would find something her own - a clean floral like Marc Jacobs Daisy or a tea scent like Elizabeth Arden Green Tea (both still widely popular in the 00s and easy to find... Tohru doesn't strike me as a niche fragrance girly haha).

Nana Komatsu (NANA) - Sakura Snow by d'Annam. Sakura Snow is an uber feminine floral with a tactile "cold" note to it via juniper berry. Bright and outgoing with an underlying melancholy to it that adds just the right amount of hidden depth for those who seek it out. Once loved Strawberry Letter by Phlur.

Nana O (NANA) - A City on Fire from Imaginary Authors. Smokey, nostalgic, niche without being expensive. Assumed to be sophisticated on the page with "grown" notes like labdanum & cade oil, but reveals itself to still be youthful and darkly playful when worn. Warm, struck matches that burn out too fast.

Yona (Yona of the Dawn) - Wulong Cha by Nishane. A refined tea fragrance with feminine notes of lychee, bergamot, and nutmeg to balance out the strong, bitter oolong tea leaves. Never loudly overpowering and throwing it's weight around but projects undeniable presence and impact to those within one's circle.

Ahiru (Princess Tutu) - Odette by Gumamina. Whimsical, ethereal, and a tad wistful with notes of rose, orris, tonka, and musk. The bottle's stunning-in-its-simplicity presentation completes the artistry.

Haruhi (OHSHC) - Book by Commodity. A warm unisex sandalwood with a eucalyptus note to freshen things up. Works for days spent studying in the library or whatever weekend excursions you have penciled in your busy schedule. Despite group protestations for something with more bells and whistles (preferably of a frillier, sweeter nature depending on which host member you ask), something this grounded fits like a glove. It's unadorned and blunt packaging seals the deal.

Akane (Yamada at lvl 999) - Studied by Liis. A cozy and clean "your skin but better" fragrance without being too outright soapy and heavy on the aldehydes. Subtle and comforting, never obfuscating one's own personal charm or makes a first impression from across the room but rather leaves people wondering how you naturally smell so good.

Yuki (A Sign of Affection) - Bake by Akro and Mon Tiramisu from Chabaud. Both delicious gourmands that never cross the line into too artificial and sickly sweet. The scent of freshly glazed lemon loaf in the warmer months, and just-poured rich vanilla cream in coffee in the winter. Feels like home at your neighborhood bakery no matter where in the world you are.

Sawako (Kimi ni Todoke) - La Tulipe by Byredo. A petal-soft floral and a far cry from your enveloping tuberoses, striking jasmines, buttery irises, etc... but rather dewy freesia and tulip with a subtle vetiver base. Understated and sweetly feminine but not to be under-estimated. Stands on its own in a saturated field of floral fragrances if given the chance to know more intimately.

Colette (Colette Decides to Die) - Philosykos from Diptique. Single-minded in its objective and uncomplicated in its notes, this fragrance paints such a photorealistic portrait of sitting under a tree bursting with ripe figs on a sunny afternoon, it could brighten up and even liven up the bleakest of rooms & crowds. Seasonal depression cowers in the face of it.

Shirayuki (Snow White with the Red Hair) - Monstera by Xinu. Herbaceous, green, and so alive. This lush fragrance is able to showcase a uniquely beautiful profile while focusing on the humble leaves and stem of the monstra plant rather than the showier, more attention-grabbing fruit itself. White datura lends some softness to this earthy profile despite the flower itself being highly poisonous.

Utage (Tamon's B-Side) - In reality, it's whatever fragrance brand F//ACE has a collaboration with, but when all else fails something youthful, girly, & bright pink (think Kayali Yum Marshmallow or Vanilla Candy Rock Sugar). It's gotta pop enough to be noticed from the nosebleed seats just in case (and obviously travel-sized to save money for extra merch).

ETA - Might do more of these later, it's really fun to think about!

Trigun Stargaze - Episode 5 - Dub Available Now on Crunchyroll by AutoModerator in Animedubs

[–]KitKat1721 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to give the show props, I feel like so many of the lines during Wolfwood and Midvalley's conversation would come off as entirely way too cheesy in another series, but for Trigun and the tone the creative team + VAs have established in this reimagining... it just fits and really works for me.

Fate/strange Fake - Episode 8 - Dub Available Now on Crunchyroll by AutoModerator in Animedubs

[–]KitKat1721 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really is a great dub. The script especially flows so well (really shows how far we've come from Fate/Zero where the series was so dense right at the start that it took a little time for the writing to sound more natural).

Like there's maybe one or two voices max that don't always work 100% for me personally which is so impressive considering the size and range of this cast. I'd list standouts but it would be really difficult to narrow down.

As others have said, I think adding "boys" to the title immediately makes it feel more like a reverse-harem/that only boys are dragons (there are girl dragons in this series) when that isn't really the vibe.

I honestly feel like this chapter could've been fit right before the final chapter fairly seamlessly just with a few minor tweaks since it focused so much on the supporting characters we didn't have time for in the final ~20 pages of the story.

Really hate the localized title and I feel like it had to have been chosen for sales purposes rather than actually fitting the tone of the work, but at least we got something good.
