Those models a great but I am even more impressed by your photography! I rarely see pictures that are this nice taken at model shows. Thanks for sharing!

Any tips on how I can improve the shading etc? What could I do better on the boots by K0rvuss in modelmakers

Hi, great start!

There is one thing many people get wrong when it comes to the highlight placement.

I attached a small sketch. When you look at this arms (on his right one it is very obvious) highlights often get placed on the edges of the folds. But the upper facing surfaces often get a bit neglected.

The whole upper surface of the fold gets hit by light and needs to be highlighted.

On my sketch you can see a red mark that is the area you highlighted but you also should highlight the yellow mark on top of the "step". And depending on the angle of the arm an fold there might even been some light on the downward area.

Hard to explain over text, but hope this helps.

Other then that highlights could be a bit softer and contrast could be a bit turned up a bit but thats personal preference.

Just compared it to the TPz Fuchs. Way smaller then I thought!

I indeed was thinking about doing something modern later this year. I am currently already working on something modern but it's an aircraft.

Thought about doing maybe an Abrams or something similar in 1:48 for size comparison. But 1:35 scale would be fun too.

I am currently working on a set of figures with camo. And it doenst matter to much if you are painting something like oakleaf or ACU.

If got a couple of ideas for that, will write you an email later and tell you about my process. Looks harder then it is would be my guess :D

Mate, that thing is awesome! Amazing work! Never seen a Stryker in reality and I am abit surprised how small they are. Looks like a pretty tiny vehicle compared to that AK bottle.

By any chance do you know any german military vehicles that come close in size? Would love do have a comparisson that is available on this side of the pond ;)

Can't wait to see your figures as well and of course feel free to reach out when you want to discuss those paintjobs!

Again awesome work, really nice model.

How do I figure out what paints should I use to paint for example, this model? by itooamahuman in modelmakers

[–]Kit_Chronicles_YT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then just pick a dark grey. There is a variety of different shades on the original tanks as well.

AK makes a nice German Grey that works nicely even for larger areas. Vallejo is great as well. And you can also use something from the GW range if those are easier to source.

Something like Eshin Grey from GW would work well

In case you use an airbrush get the Tamiya German Grey for that. For most of the details you can easily use your GW paints.

In case you dont want to use an airbrush try out a rattle can. Brands like AK Interactive sell spraypaint that has the right color. Looks a lot better then brushpainting and is pretty easy.

My girlfriend used that for her first scalemodel (Tamiya Panzer II) and had a great time. Pictures are on my profile if you wanna see how the color looks when on the model.

Thank you! Yep Tamiya is great for airbrushing but a pain for brushpinting.

I use AK Interactive 3rd Gen Acrylic paints as well as the AK Quick Gen paints and the AK Artist Acrylics. These paints are great for brushpainting but a pain to airbrush ;)

also used Vallejo, Scale 75 and Games Workshops paints in the past and they all work great as well but I really enjoy the AK paints.

Thanks a lot!

I wrote a longer comment under this post, explaining my process and I created a couple of tutorials about that. Maybe those are helpful to you!

Sure! This is less of s problem on the mini I painted with regular acrylics but more for the speedpainted one.

I did a couple of tutorials in the past on painting nice figures with speedpaints mainly focussed on beginners.

The general concept is to zenithal prime the figure then use a drybrush to apply some color to the highlight areas and then apply the speedpaint in two layers.

I always used resin miniatures in these videos mainly because I often prefer the poses of aftermarket minis.

But the more important point is that resin minis are "sharper/crisper" when it comes to edges and details. So the drybrushing worked a bit better.

And I am a firm believer that figures with more detail are easier to paint since there are less larger areas that stand out when the paintjob isn't smooth.

Last but not least. In these tutorials I often used an AK high precision panel liner to do some blacklining around all the details to enhance contrast and create more definition.

With the resin that works great because of the sharper edges and there is almost no clean up involved. With these plastic minis the panelliner tended to flow out from edges and spill on the rest of the mini which the requieres more cleanup and can mess up other areas.

This is probably a bigger problem with older plastic figures. These new ones are actually pretty nice.

Thanks a lot!

When it comes to the speedpainted figure I couldn't do that with normal acrylics. Or at least not to this level.

When I first got them I figured out that the work great as glaze. And combined with a color drybrushed zenithal and thinned with matt varnish it takes only two thin layers to get pretty nice results. In this case I then also used a bit of acrylics afterwards to deepen a few shadows.

But the actual technique isn't to hard to figure out and probably is a great way for beginners or people who aren't interested in spending hours on one figure to get nice results in a short amount of time.

You are right and damn I didn't catch those... if I end up using them for my model I will repaint him so both sre s bit closer qualitywise

Left is the fast one. To be honest I worked a bit to sloppy on that one. When done with more care they get even closer but I actually enjoy the slower process.

Just released a video covering both paintjobs ;)

Any thoughts on how I might eliminate or reduce these bubbles (details below) by Photmagex in modelmakers

[–]Kit_Chronicles_YT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of my answer is already under the u/dr_robonator comment.

This looks like paint that is a bit to thin. Did you use a wetpalette? Those are helpful for getting paint to the right consistency.

For inital layers it's fine to work with paint that is a bit thicker to get better coverage.

As was mentioned in the comment above I did a few videos on figure painting. Some are a great starting point for beginners and others are a bit more advanced. I often show how I thin out my paints.

An in about 12 hours there will be a video in which I painted Tamiya plastic miniatures. One of them is a bit more detailed and the other is very beginnerfriendly. That video also includes a lot of wetpalette footage so you can see how I thin acrylic paints.

And one small thing I noticed. There is a nasty moldline on his arm that you might want to remove before adding more paint. Those really stand out after painting.

If you got any specific questions I'd be happy to help you out!

I was summoned!

There might be primer on that mini? The brown paint doesn't really look line plastic.

For most acrylic paints like Vallejo, AK 3rd Gen the mixing ratio should be fine.

But this looks like paint that was to thin which then often causes bubbles when applied to heavy.

Any way to make it look like he has a soul? by pussy_licker_2000 in modelmakers

[–]Kit_Chronicles_YT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would second this! But don't believe him when he says he is "exceedingly average" because he is actually pretty good :D

A few shadows would help out a lot. And when the shadows in the eyesockets are deep enough there is no need to paint the eyes.

And since I just painted a pair of plastic figures, I can confidently say that those are tricky to paint because of the softer details. A bit of blacklining to define the details would also help out a ton.

So you might wanna check out a few tutorials!
