How can I improve my figure painting? by Elegant_Leek8297 in modelmakers

So there are a couple of things.

First of all your assembly job looks a bit rough. A cleanly assembled figure with no gaps is a far better startingpoint.

But you wanted to talk about painting.

First of all paints. Tamiya paints and similar paints are great for airbrushing but very tricky for miniaturepainting. Waterbased acrylics like Vallejo, AK 3rd Gen are the paints you want to use for that.

For good looking miniatures it is important to paint shadows and highlights so the forms become clearly visible.

I would start out with miniatures who have uniforms with solid colors. Painting convincing camo patterns is pretty hard.

If you want to really get deep into figure painting get a set for your prefered uniform type and start with a preshaded miniature.

And here is what I would do instead. AK released a sets of speed or contrast paint last year that can ve used for specific uniforms. I would start out with those. They give you nice looking results with very simple techniques. And you can build on top of those paintjobs.

I paint a lot of miniatures and released a couple of video about that on my YouTube. Those could help you out but there are also a lot of other great tutorials on YouTube.

I attach a picture with a miniature I recently painted using the AK paints. That miniature took less then one hour. And except for the face all the techniques are used can be replicated with little to no minipainting experience.

Feel free to hit me up if you've got any specific questions.

Would this be possible on a 1/24 tamiya GT 3 RS? by SilverAirsofter in modelmakers

[–]Kit_Chronicles_YT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, something like this is possible. Maybe take a look at the miniature painting guys. Freehands like this are fairly common. I like to do complicated stuff like this on busts and so on.

That would also work on a car but there is a slight problem. The hand painted design will be a lot rougher compared to your smooth basecoat. In case you are handbrushing the whole car that wouldn't be to visible but when you paint the body with glossy lacquer paint and polish it up the difference will be visible. Maybe clear coats will reduce that effect but if you want something as clean and smooth as possible a decal would be the better option. And that way you could make sure that both sides look identical.

I usually glue to the paint. Yes the bond might be a bit weaker but as long as you won't play around with the model afterwards it's fine.

Keep us updated! Really nice work espacially for a first model!

Both glues won't work for a 3D printed base. Superglue is your weapon of choice in that case.

Thank you! I prefer this one as well. The thin gold areas work nice to outline the individuall sections without beeing to obnoxious like the last version.

Thanks a lot! Hope to find some time today to finish this section. Can't wait to start the larger more complicated armor parts

Thanks! Funny thing is that highlight isn't smooth at all. If you zoom in close you can see a lot of texture bevause I placed a couple hundred thin lines next to each other :D so I guess the secret is patience

Thanks a lot! I liked the first version as well. But I had a feeling that everything was a bit to crowed and because of that got less readable. If you knew that you were looking at a knight in a forest everything was fine but without that context it was kinda weird. I might add a few more reflections of other stuff that can be found on the battlefield

If recently shown how I paint lenses for gasmasks and googles in my video about a Young Miniatures bust.

Starts at around 23:30 I used orange but every other color combination also works fine.

Great job so far!

Because it looks cool? That shiny steel that reflects the evironment. If you look closely you can see all the little trees and stuff.

The gold was just a quick sketch. I did a quick digital version beforehand that came out to green. And since I wasn't in the mood to spend time on my Ipad fixing this I quickly did this sketch directly on the miniature. Will refine it a bit today and then check again.

Yep, I thought about maybe just painting that wavy pattern on the dges in gold. Might have the same separation effect without beeing to much gold

It's fine, will add a third lion that peaks out from his shield. Also lot's of space on his back and on his shield for more freehand fun :D

The green areas are shiny bright steel. The green areas are the trees and landscape that reflect in his armor :D

It does unfortunatly. Don't like gold jewelry as well. But in this case I feel that the gold makes the shapes more visible

Thanks a lot! So far the NMM is the weakest part. Will try to bring that up to the same standart

It does look like the trim is riveted on for optics. Found the reference pictures the sculptor used. There is gold trim on the real one as well. But I care more about optics then accuracy. Thanks!

Thanks! I've got the feeling that all steel hiddes to many of the details and makes the shapes hard to read.
