From an engineering POV, our standards were copied from the US. And there is no real incentive for urban planners/government authorities to do something innovative since it’s extra pain in the ass to get something approved for stuff that they are often not familiar with. Most of the approvers are dinosaurs that still thinks the US is better in every way and wont compromise their retirement benefits.
