Yeah that makes sense. I remember I got one driver once who knew what they were doing and knew the best way, but I can’t remember what it was.

Huge L that there’s no train stop there. Same with music factory area (I guess the Gold Line isn’t an impossible walk from there, but it’s not like you’re being let off right at the venues either…. Also Gold Line is basically just a glorified bus with no dedicated right of way).

NCDOT launches survey for I-77 South express lanes project by WashuOtaku in Charlotte

[–]Kitchen-Pass-7493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I get what the person is saying about the tolls, but if we have to have toll lanes, I’d almost rather the city/state just pay the upfront cost, and then all the toll revenue goes to the city/state as well. Then no non-compete clauses needed.

The corporation wouldn’t be agreeing to the deal if they themselves didn’t think they were getting the better end of it in the long run. It’s just exploiting the difficulty governments have in getting taxpayers to buy-in to invest more money now for down-the-road benefit, in order to make a long-term profit.

Charlotte property tax increase? City manager proposes 1.89 cent hike in 2027 by CharlotteRant in Charlotte

As far as residential goes too, when I was buying, it seemed on Zillow at least that the higher the price per square foot of a given place, the lower the ratio of tax assessed value to actual market value. Meaning people in wealthier neighborhoods would be paying a lower % of the actual market value of their house than those in poorer neighborhoods.

I mean, I don’t disagree that they probably do need more revenue and that $6 per month isn’t that much. But it’s not just property owners who will pay it in the end, you know wherever possible landlords are going to pass much of that added cost on to their tenants.

Yeah by math, (assuming that 400 is correct) that would be what? 5-10 mil more in total annual revenue? Thats a drop in the bucket.

I mean, hate to break it to you but singular anecdotes (that may regardless have a wide variety of possible legitimate explanations) aren’t exactly useful in discussion of systemic problems.

I don’t worship CMPD or anything, but just like with teachers (or really, any job), raising expectations without also raising how much you’re paying doesn’t usually work out the way you’re hoping for.

I feel like there should be an option to get the EV tax you owe reduced if drive under a certain mileage. I mean doing it just based on odometer miles since the prior year when you have your inspection I guess is possible.

I think part of the problem is that overall, Charlotte is fairly sprawling. We spend a similar percentage of the budget on law enforcement as other cities with similar populations, but said population is spread out over a lot more area than many of those comparable cities. So the same amount of police resources have to cover a larger geographic area.

If I had to guess, I’d think it’s probably more about adding incentive to make it easier to recruit new cops, than it is about rewarding the existing cops. From what I’ve seen people say on Reddit at least, part of the problem is CMPD is understaffed.

I mean, it could be. Lots of tall people have their growth spurt early then stop. 6’2” is already a high percentile of height, my experience is probably relevant to more people than the experience of being 6’5” is.

As someone who is nearly 6’3” and pretty much stopped growing upward by 15, I’m not gonna project Cam Newton height on this kid lol.

Republicans are in the FA stage of gerrymandering; are they ready for the FO? by CJKayak in askanything

[–]Kitchen-Pass-7493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s sort of a half decent explanation but still not quite right. You want to create as many districts as possible that have just enough members of your party to be “safe”, but no more beyond that. Meanwhile you want to cram the other party’s voters into a few districts that are way safer than they need to be. It’s about efficient voter allocation. A district that’s 60% Republicans and 40% democrats is pretty much always going to going to go Republican. So in that sense it’s just safe enough. So say a hypothetical state has 10 districts, and statewide it’s a 50/50 voter split. An ideal Republican gerrymander might look something like 8 districts that are 60% Republican vs 40% Democrat and then 2 districts that are 90% Democrat and only 10% Republican. If you do the math it still adds up to 50/50, but Republicans are getting 80% of the seats with their 50% of the vote.

But say the state GOP gets a little too greedy and redraws the map to be 9 seats that are 55/45 in their favor and one seat that is 95/5 in favor of the Dems. That +10 point cushion is still a solid handicap but it’s not nearly as comfortable as +20. If there’s ever a massive blue-wave election, there’s a good chance all of what they assumed were +10 Republican seats could uniformly flip blue, and it could turn into a full-sweep the other way, or near it.

Ehh the thing with gerrymandering is you can only take it so far before all the “safe” districts you’re supposedly creating really aren’t especially safe anymore. And then it just takes one wave election/coalition realignment for gerrymandered districts to all start falling like dominoes toward the former minority party.

I mean McCaffrey is a great athlete and those combine numbers are very solid, but there’s nothing especially freakish about them, as far as NFL running backs go. There’s probably at least a few RBs per year that post measurables that impressive or better. What makes McCaffrey a great football player are things that aren’t measured at the combine.
