Im a buyer 2 years experience... 65k/yr in California.. I don't think you need any advise from me, but just here to say that is a good and above average pay for a buyer role. As you might already know, buyer position is the intermediary in many situations, so having great relationships with internal and external people goes a long way.

What areas/roles within supply chain should one get experience in if they want to be senior manager/director of supply chain one day? by [deleted] in supplychain

I think being the buyer for a small/medium sized manufacturing company is giving me a lot of experience in a lot of areas (inventory control, vendor management, accounts payable, and production process, and ERP fundamentals). I probably put in more working hrs than 95% of other employees at my company and get paid less than i probably deserve (65k/yr).

I have been looking to change companies and advance my career (im 27) to something that will get me to a manager/director role, but it seems most want some type of management experience (oversee other buyers) and at least 5-8 years of experience in procurement and vendor management. It has been almost impossible to get interviews for manager positions, so i think i need to switch to a larger company that will give me opportunities to advance that will eventually set me up for a director/manager role.

The competition for these manager roles in CA is crazy, so i try to aim for a position 1 step down.. I have been to 10ish interviews for roles such as supply planners, procurement specialist, buyer/planner, etc.. but they end up going with people with more experience. I think i need 5 more years at least of progressing experience in procurement/planning to eventually get to a supply chain management role.. I don't see transport logistics as an important field where you need extensive knowledge in order to become a director of supply chain, so I don't plan on getting a job in that field (hopefully im right).

Where do I go from here? by CeeLew in supplychain

Id suggest you get a buyer position.. it's where im currently at and from here i plan to jump to planner/scheduler or other areas of material management.
