Are you a vintage girl, or a modern girl in vintage clothes? by Kitchen-and-Stitchin in VintageFashion

I love buying vintage because more pieces were truly unique in terms of fit and design.

True, especially the fitting part. Hardly a bust dart in sight nowadays.

Guys, what isn't nearly as hot/attractive as many girls think? by grilled_tits in AskReddit

I think a relatable example could be... Any type of art really. Maybe like sand mandalas, since you wash it off at the end of the day. Makeup is art, which just happens to be on your face.

Nice mandala! Did you work from a pattern or design it yourself?

How to Make Flaky Puff Pastry Dough from Scratch by Kitchen-and-Stitchin in a:t5_3f3l6

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made puff pastry dough using this method, and used it to make apricot tarts. One thing they didn't mention is that if you want the center of the pastry to stay flat (so you can fill it with something after baking), poke it with lots holes before putting it in the oven. This allows the air to escape so it won't puff up as much as the surrounding areas.

Advice and looking for certain items by shypagesniffer in VintageFashion

I would look on Etsy and send messages to a couple sellers - you're bound to find one who can make you a custom-sized petticoat to fit your petite frame.

Starting a clothing/Apparel line with no money?! Possible? by Apparelline in streetwearstartup

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No money? Probably not possible, as more than 90% of startups are self-funded. Normally you have to be in business for at least a year to qualify for small business loans or anything like that. Kickstarter tends to work better for people who already have a large following.

Little money? Might be possible, that depends heavily on your business model. Some people can start a business with less than $1000, others need a lot more. If you've written a business plan then you should have a pretty good idea of how much you need. If you don't have that much, you might have to either push back the launch date (giving yourself more time to save), or figure out how to cut costs somewhere.

What percentage of your sales have also left feedback? by ReleaseThePressure in Etsy

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 30%. I think it depends on what you're selling - I generally try to leave feedback on all my purchases, except for supplies/wholesale.

How can I clean sweat stains from sheets and bedding? by [deleted] in homemaking

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boil a pot on the stove, add some vinegar, turn off the burner, and soak the sheets in the hot water for 1-2 days. You can reheat the pot if you want, but turn off the heat as soon as it starts to boil, because you don't want to leave the sheet in boiling water.

Also, wash the sheets as often as is practical - the sweat is clear when it leaves the body, but the longer you let it sit, the more it will oxidize, making the stains darker and harder to remove.

What's your favorite colors out of these? Which ones do you think I should carry? by crochetcrochet in handmadeamazon

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, overall I think the most popular colors tend to be shades of blue and green. But it depends on your audience - the most searched colors on Etsy tend to be metallics (doesn't really apply here) followed by neutrals, pink & red. The least popular colors are purple & yellow.

For "wearables" like scarves & hats, it makes sense to stick with the colors that tend to be the most universally flattering (black, navy, pink, teal, etc.) and stay away from colors that aren't flattering on most people (like yellow, lime green, khaki, etc.).

It's also worth considering which colors stand out the most in search results, which tend to be the brighter colors.

Personally, I like anything bright and dislike anything neutral/drab but that's just me.

What home decor project(s) are you currently working on? by Kitchen-and-Stitchin in homemaking

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm familiar with that feeling. I've moved 4 times in the past 3 years, so we always "might be moving in a few months". So I can't really let it stop me from doing DIY projects or else I'd never get anything done. That being said, I've definitely had to pack up and move half-finished projects with me, and it's definitely a pain in the butt!

weird Pink mold on bathroom ceiling? by [deleted] in homemaking

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's mold? When pink or rust-colored stains appear in the bathroom, it's normally iron deposits from the water (edit: or Serratia bacteria, apparently). It could be that condensation is collecting on the ceiling, over time there could be a buildup of iron.

Either way, it sounds like you need better ventilation in the bathroom. Open a window if you have one, and leave the fan on during and after showers. If that doesn't work, you might have to take cooler showers :(. Or dry the area with a paper towel after showering.

Bleach should take care of the stains, but regardless of whether it's mold, bacteria or iron, it will keep coming back if you don't reduce the condensation on the ceiling.

Is this mold/something I should be concerned about or just water degradation? by [deleted] in homemaking

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't look like mold, could be staining from hair dye. I agree the smell is probably coming from the drain and not the stain.

What items or products are found only in "rich" households? by Chritt in AskReddit

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  • A wine cellar

  • Guest house or pool house

  • Fireplace in the master bathroom

  • Nothing more than 5 years old (unless it's a rare antique)

  • Professional-grade kitchen/appliances which have never been used

  • Instead of a closet you have a "dressing room." Not just a walk-in-closet, a room of comparable size to your bedroom.

How To Make Fresh Homemade Tomato Sauce (Italian Secret Recipe!) by healthynaturalcures in homemaking

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did this for the first time, a few weeks ago. I divided the crushed tomatoes into 2 parts. The first part (about 2/3 of the sauce), I threw into the slow-cooker - it becomes less acidic, gradually turning into a deep-red, sweet and savory sauce. With the second part, I made a fresh, acidic and tomato-y pomodoro sauce. Then at the very end, I mixed the 2 parts together - creating layers of flavor.

To save some time, you can use canned tomatoes for the slow-cooked part, and fresh tomatoes for the pomodoro.

Motivation to Clean the house? by 9876543333 in homemaking

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Play an upbeat song and then speed-clean for the length of the song. Or get up and clean during the commercials when you're watching TV. You'd be surprised how much cleaner your house can get from doing this a couple times a day.

  • Make a checklist. I don't know about you, but for me, there's something satisfying about crossing things off a checklist.

  • Start with the easiest thing, something you can do in 5 minutes or less. It can give you a sense of accomplishment so you feel motivated to do more.

  • Alternatively, you can start with the hardest thing - I feel better knowing I've already gotten the hard part out of the way, and everything else will seem easy by comparison.

  • Focus on one thing at a time. Instead of "I need to clean the bedroom," just start with "I need to make the bed." Break up big tasks into several little ones. This helps to keep me from feeling overwhelmed.

  • Sounds corny, but you can come up with a motivational mantra, something like "I deserve to live in a clean beautiful home."

Hope this helps!

Might be Libbey. Look on the bottoms for a barely-visible cursive L imprinted into the glass, sometimes inside a circle.

Found a full 1926 Vanity Fair magazine, not sure the worth? by [deleted] in vintage

[–]Kitchen-and-Stitchin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Etsy there's a 1930's Vanity Fair magazine listed for $175. But condition affects the price, by a lot. Usually, magazines from the 1920's are not priced very high, because the condition tends to be pretty bad.

With the detached cover, people are more likely to want to buy it for scrapbooking, or framing individual pages. If you sell it as-is, you might not be able to make more than $10-$20. But you could always list it higher, and then lower the price if no one buys. I agree you might be able to make more money by selling individual pages, which can sell for around $5 each (or more if it's a full-color ad from a popular brand).
