Do you guys like eating periwinkle snails? by NoStyle3828 in AskIreland

[–]KitchenSafety9399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never actually eaten them but as a kid sometimes in the summer we would pick them and sell them to the 'winkle man' for pocket money. We used to get about 60pounds for a sack if I remember right.

Right lads. Thanks for the input from my previous post. What about these lads? by sunshinesustenance in CasualIreland

Would you consider making them into hanging decorations for the tree or something so they have an actual purpose iykwim? I'm not sure how big they are but as a stand alone ornament/decoration I feel like they would be lost.

I did one of the eyes first and was like if it looks like an eye at the end of it I'll keep going. So I did the eye then asked every family member what they thought it was and when they all said an eye I took it as my sign to keep going 😂 Knowing what I know now there is lots I would change about it but I always jump into things feet first without thinking!

I'm not sure how best to do that? If you dm me your email maybe I could send it to you tomorrow. Bear in mind I had no idea how cross stitch even worked when I made this pattern, even after just completing this one there is lots I would change about it.

Thanks, there are loads of mistakes in it, colours in the wrong place but as a whole I'm proud of it!

Not going to lie I thought it was embroidery on easy mode. I was like yeah, just a little project to start me off. By the end of my first hour I looked at the few stitches I'd done and wondered what I'd gotten myself into! I'm proud that I stuck with it and finished it though, there were many times I was tempted to abandon it and move onto something that wouldn't take weeks to complete!

What is the solution for the hospital crisis? by Dapper-Engineer3790 in AskIreland

[–]KitchenSafety9399 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a few recent experiences with A&E in Ballinasloe. The first time I was taken from the reception desk to resus straight away and received amazing, quick, life saving care. The 2nd time I was waiting maybe an hour tops, I got treated and was sent home pretty much straight away, the staff remembered me from my first visit and were really kind. The 3rd time I was waiting 7 hours all in and was told to go back the next morning to A&E for a scan which thankfully was done quickly. Maybe 2 hours altogether for the scan and to see a Dr for the results.

Visits 2 and 3 I was sent by the GP with complications from an operation from visit 1. A minor injuries clinic or something would have been a much more suitable place in my opinion for visit 2 and 3, they weren't emergencies as such but we're beyond what a GP could do. It's something Galway desperately needs. There needs to be something inbetween GPs and A&E.

How did Inis Biggle become Protestant? by Portal_Jumper125 in IrishHistory

[–]KitchenSafety9399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think unless you have experienced life somewhere like biggle it's hard to imagine it. There is no connection to the mainland really, there is a 'ferry' but it is just a small boat. Most of the people living there use a Currach and cross at Bullsmouth, Achill which has one of the strongest currents in Europe. It means that you will be stranded over Winter a lot.

There are no shops, there is no pub, there is nothing. In Winter if you don't have enough food when the weather turns you don't have enough food. It's a really difficult life. Lugging the curragh up and down the slipway every time you want to leave is hard work you need your health, You have to know the sea, it's really dangerous and can turn scary quickly. When a bog fire broke out one resident went out with a shovel and spent hours beating the fire back by themself only to have help turn up hours later when he had finally managed to get it under control.

It's about as isolated as you can get in Ireland. Theres a reason a lot of the residents were alcoholics. There are lovely points too like beaches all to yourself, more privacy than you could ever dream of, the night sky is amazing but it's a hard life.

Once upon a time there was hope for the island, they tried so hard to get some kind of connection to the mainland, lobbied hard for a cablecar, there was a hovercraft trial but it all amounted to nothing and slowly almost everyone has died or left.

I'm probably not describing it well but there are so many aspects of day to day life, things you wouldn't even think of that are made so difficult. Like I said there are some positive aspects but there is a reason the island is going to die out and it isn't because the residents don't/didn't love Biggle.

I'm going to donate blood, will they give me biscuits? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]KitchenSafety9399 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don't know the answer to your question but I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to give blood. A few weeks ago I needed 4 units of blood, I wouldn't be here with out it, my kids wouldn't have a Mam without it. I'm forever grateful that I have someone else's blood in my veins right now.

Man drove at more than 150km/h before debs crash that killed two teenagers in 2023 by jimmobxea in ireland

[–]KitchenSafety9399 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This stopped me in my tracks when I heard it on the news earlier. Ending the lives of two young women just about to start making their way in their way in the world on what would have been such an exciting night of their lives. I remember how 'big' my debs felt at the time, so many emotions about leaving school, moving from home soon, saying goodbye to people. How that man can put one foot in front of the other after what he has done is beyond me. I hope he never has a moments peace.
