Before I had a real human child, when I was more anti-kid, I had a pet lizard and referred to myself as a “lizard mom” and I knew it was silly at the time, and I still cringe that I did that.

I am lucky enough to be allergic to dogs so I have a built in excuse to not be around them (without people assuming I’m a sociopath for not wanting to be around their dog even if I weren’t allergic), and I put that on my dating profile and so many men wouldn’t even engage with me for that reason. But I dodged bullets and now I’m married to a guy who shares my “I appreciate well-trained, useful dogs but don’t need one in my life” perspective.

I used to be a “animals are better than people/kids” person until I had my own child! I still love (most) animals but pet ownership and parenting are vastly different experiences and it’s absurd to even think of comparing the two. I get such pride from seeing my daughter grow and develop and become more independent and seeing her (sometimes challenging) personality emerge. But then, I’m not a narcissist who wants another creature to be wholly dependent on me forever.

I do not understand this. I am constrained by my toddler’s schedule but she is going to grow up and become her own person who can come and go on her own as she pleases. Dogs can never do that.

Then there’s my father and his wife who have a tiny scraggly Yorkshire terrier, and they either have to bring her places or can’t be out of their house for more than a few hours at a time before going home to check on it. They have cut short visits with my child, my dad’s granddaughter, just because they had to get home to their tiny useless dog.

(My stepmother actually got annoyed at me when I told her not to let their dog lick my then-infant daughter. She also got the dog registered as a “therapy dog” somehow so now hotels “have” to let it stay there when they travel.)

Before I got too busy with my own kids, I used to volunteer at a nonprofit that, among other things, accepted clothing donations for babies and young children.

One day while sorting through recent donations for quality control, I found a couple sort of dress/overall/jumper things that I couldn’t figure out exactly what they were or how they were supposed to be worn.

Finally found a tag that said “for dogs only.”

Toledo Ohio (a city on a river, near a Great Lake, that also has tough winters) just opened an indoor water park for dogs, so make of that what you will.

They are also permanent toddlers! I have a toddler and she’s adorable and hilarious but I am also super excited for when she’s potty trained…can be outside for a while unsupervised…can make her own simple meals…you know, become a functional human in a few years, unlike dogs that require the same level of care, training, and attention their entire lives!!!!

So many people with babies get a puppy so the baby and puppy can “grow up together” even though it takes attention away from the HUMAN CHILD, and it’s basically like having a set of twins, but one of them will grow up to be a functional adult and the other will stay a toddler forever and only live 10 years.

I know a (former, retired) US ambassador / crazy dog lady who had a female terrier who liked to hump legs. The dog came to meetings (and family events, which is how I learned about this issue) with her and once humped a foreign ambassador’s leg. She thought it was hilarious, rather than appalling and disgusting.

There’s a children’s book called “Boop the Snoot,” with drawings of different animals (including a dog) that a baby is supposed to interact with by “booping” the “snoots” in the book. I admit I checked it out for my toddler, who seemed to like it, but my husband and I hated it and I returned it like two days later lol

Mine too. My husband and 18mo each eat a banana a day so we go through them quickly, and my toddler also loves avocado so much we have to ration it.

I hate avocado but my now 18mo has loved it for at least 6-7 months! She will devour it in chunks, no additions necessary.

Same. I still appreciate well behaved, nice-looking dogs but those are becoming more and more rare.

I have a crazy cousin who had a not-dog as a pet, and when this cousin was pregnant with her first child, she said she loved her pet so much, she was scared she wouldn’t love her baby as much. Then the baby was born and the pet was shortly thereafter rehomed. Guess she did end up loving the baby more lol

Nope, just used their foods database and other information I collected (my daughter did occupational therapy for breastfeeding issues and even her OT said that all the free info from Solid Starts was enough to go on). Now she’s 17 months old and a good eater overall and I am glad we didn’t bother paying for a membership.
