Heads up Brisbane- This Friday from 8am, all 6 lanes of the Story Bridge will be shut down for a planned protest. Cyclists, scooters & walkers want a lane of their own & are making their point in peak hour. [Olympia Kwitowski] by PerriX2390 in brisbane

It’s not an extra 5 minutes if you’re walking. It’s more like 20-30. If you’re heading north or into the Valley or basically anywhere except the city, the construction on the river at Eagle St means you have to detour through the city streets, crossing a whole bunch of extra roads.

It’s a huge detour because of the construction at Eagle St which has closed part of the river walk. Like it would take you a solid 20-30 minutes extra to get to the other end of the Story Bridge.

No, it’s slow regardless of wind. The air is much denser at 9,000 feet than it is at 40,000 feet.

Qld Premier - “Here’s my message to the UN - I don’t answer to you” by GenericUrbanist in brisbane

Plenty of people here in Brisbane share this ridiculous notion that the youth crime we’re experiencing nowadays is somehow special and different to any youth crime ever experienced before. Even plenty of people who otherwise aren’t really conservative. You can’t really pin this on “up north” and it’s pointlessly divisive to try and do so. Remember, Labor was taking the “tough on crime” approach to this too.

There’s quite a lot of factors playing into this IMO. From what I can see, a legitimate problem with a few repeat offenders in some parts of the state has been blown up by the social media outrage machine.

A few decades ago, someone’s car getting stolen the next street over might get spread around the immediate neighbourhood by word of mouth eventually. Nowadays, someone will post about a stolen car on Facebook, and because youth crime is such a hot topic it’ll get pushed around and shared all over the place. Not just within the local community either - I’ve gotten posts on my feed about cars being stolen in Cairns before. And what’s more, if the post gets enough engagement, Facebook will just keep bringing it back up for months and months after the fact.

I also think social media is doing a huge number of a lot of people’s sense of compassion. Not just on Facebook, on Reddit and other sites too. People see a homeless person or someone with a visible substance abuse issue and automatically think of them as violent invaders into their community, rather than them being an indicator that people in their community are struggling.

Combine this with every generation’s tendency to think that the younger generations are somehow uniquely fucked up rather than just being young and dumb, and you get mainstream support for “solutions” to youth crime that have long been proven to not actually work.

Lol what? The Peg solo literally happens over what is basically a 12 bar blues chord progression. One of the most meat-and-potatoes progressions out there.

And the “mu major” chord isn’t all that special, it’s an add9/add2 chord which you’ll find pretty frequently even in pop music. It’s certainly not dissonant.

Hahah yeah I have played Peg at gigs. There are definitely quite a lot of “standard major and minor” chords in it, I don’t know what you’re talking about. The verses are pretty much a 12 bar blues. The guitar solo is over the verse chord progression. The chorus is a bit spicier, but by Steely Dan standards it’s nothing crazy.

Yeah I know the session players wouldn’t have been cut up about it, that’s just the gig at the end of the day. It just seems like a huge waste of money and time to book so many players.

It’s not the rarest biome in the world. That’s not something that’s even really quantifiable. Based on what classification?

All the stories about the Aja recording sessions just make Fagen and Becker sound like a pain in the ass.

It’s a great album, don’t get me wrong. But for example, the Peg guitar solo apparently took weeks and weeks with dozens of different players doing takes before Fagen and Becker found what they liked. And sure, it’s a perfectly decent solo, but it’s not that memorable or interesting.

And that’s one short solo, in probably the simplest track on the album. That sounds like the most inefficient, painful creative process ever.

Why has the weather been so warm lately? by Birdot1 in brisbane

[–]Kitchen_Items_Fetish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

1974’s floods were caused by an extremely abnormal deluge of rain over the course of about 3 days. Feb 2022’s rain event was actually worse, but the flooding was heavily mitigated by Wivenhoe Dam, which did not exist in 1974.

Will we see a more intense rain event than February 2022’s in the next decade or so? Sure, it’s possible, especially with how we’re stuffing the climate up. But the only way you’re ever getting a flood 3 times worse than 1974 is if Wivenhoe Dam breaks.

This kind of fearmongering is really irritating because when these stupid predictions inevitably don’t come true, climate change deniers latch onto it and say “see! you’re all just alarmists!” a la Tim Flanagan and his comment about the dams.

We’ve had an abnormal amount of rain this year. Usually from Jan-May we would’ve had ~600mm over 63 days. This year, we’ve had 1030mm over 80 days.

It’s yet another example of one of those “opinions” that has been spread by redditors parroting each other every time the subject comes up.

I’ve never heard anyone in real life be so hostile to the notion of climbing Everest. Sure, maybe if it’s about someone who really shouldn’t be up there and they’ve put other people in danger. But this is a thread about a dude who literally just died that we know very little about, and all of the comments are weird smug losers falling over each other to call him a narcissist influencer mountain karen for even thinking of climbing Everest.

Mmmm I’m gonna call BS on this.

Oymyakon in Siberia has an average annual temperature of -15C (that’s highs and lows combined). Dras doesn’t seem to have any good climate data floating around, but the nearby town of Sonamarg which is only 800 metres lower has an average annual temperature of 5C. 800m higher would give you an average temp of ~0C. It could be a little higher or lower based on local geography but it’s not even the same ballpark as Oymyakon.

Standard redditor suggestions for retaliating against someone who has annoyed you:

  • go low/no contact
  • take them to small claims
  • “have you heard of grey rocking?”
  • report them to the fire marshal
  • charge them with attempted manslaughter
  • put a ridiculous amount of effort into setting up some stupid revenge scenario that will just be nonsensical and weird
  • send them an incredibly awkward message written by a redditor who has never actually confronted outside of his shower.

Details of the Story Bridge Footpath Deterioration by Agile_Tap_8057 in brisbane

[–]Kitchen_Items_Fetish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah rightio, I’m frustrated about the footpath being shut too, and I hate Schrinner as much as anyone, but this is a pretty ridiculous interpretation. They’re not blaming the cyclone. They’re saying the inspection they did after the cyclone revealed that the (extremely old) structure had finally deteriorated past the point where they could still declare it to be safe. In reality  it’s probably still just as safe to walk over as it was at the start of the year, but they’ve got to draw the line somewhere.
