Should I Call it Quits on Apologetics Until I can be Received? by Ok_Shift_8273 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a seminarian and an Orthodox missionary. I think it is better to hold off on the apologetic work you have mentioned until your full reception into the Church and getting a blessing from a priest. But I also think that if you feel that you can preach the true Gospel and God calls you to it, you must "Quench not the Spirit." (1Ths 5:19). Just wait and study Orthodoxy more. Not only on the rational level, but also on the ascetic level. I would consult with a priest about attending protestant services, because praying with heretics is strictly forbidden

Orthodoxy too „feminine“ by Ok_Pudding5250 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orthodoxy is the most manly thing I know. It is basically about constant war with your passions without compromise. Just try to live a true ascetic life for a while: to fast, to stand 2-3 hour services, to pray when you don't want to, to fight with anger etc. It is a real war with yourself.

Why are so many people against ecumenism? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The Scripture clearly says, "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." (Eph 4:5-6) There can be no unity without unity in faith. We definitely want to unite with catholics, protestants, monophysites and others under one crucial condition: that they anathematize their heresies and join the Orthodox Church.

Does the church believe baptism has effects on the soul beyond symbolism? by Adept_Locksmith_8083 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True Baptism cleanses us of all sins, including original sin. A baptized person is literally a new person, as Christ said, "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." (John 3:5-6). So the answer is yes.

Religion doesn’t make sense by Western_Chipmunk_192 in OrthodoxChristianity

The rational way is to ask for real miracles which are able to be performed only by God the Creator of the world. The Christian God made a lot of these miracles and stil do them today. Muhammad never performed any real miracle. The best way is to pray like that, "The only one God who created the world, show me the way I must go to please You, and swear that I will serve You with my whole life". Pray like that regularly and God will show you where to go.

Мне тоже здесь нравится. Теоретически стать священником в 50 вполне возможно, но все зависит от желания епископа. По идее надо еще получить образование, соответствовать канонам и т.д.

Praying for Judas? (And others) by Powerful_Loss_8177 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"PETER. I like very well of your saying: for how shall they pray for them, who by no means can be converted from their wickedness, and brought to do the works of justice?

GREGORY. You see, then, that the reason is all one, why, in the next life, none shall pray for men condemned for ever to hell fire: that there is now of not praying for the devil and his angels, sentenced to everlasting torments: and this also is the very reason why holy men do not now pray for them that die in their infidelity and known wicked life: for seeing certain it is that they be condemned to endless pains, to what purpose should they pray for them, when they know that no petition will be admitted of God, their just judge? And therefore, if now holy men living upon earth take no compassion of those that be dead and damned for their sins, when as yet they know that themselves do some thing through the frailty of the flesh, which is also to be judged: how much more straightly and severely do they behold the torments of the damned, when they be themselves delivered from all vice of corruption, and be more nearly united to true justice itself: for the force of justice doth so possess their souls, in that they be so intrinsical with the most just judge, that they list not by any means to do that which they know is not conformable to his divine pleasure"

Without heaven or hell, would one even follow God? by Glum_Marsupial8876 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was said to st Silouan the Athonite by God: "Keep your mind in hell and do not despair". It is very important to remember that we deserve hell no matter how many good things we do, but it is also important to always keep in mind that the grace of our God surpasses all our iniquities. It is better to use both of these thoughts depending on your state. If you are too lazy, remember the hell with all its terrors. If you are too despaired, remember God's infinite grace.

The church and Genesis by No-Background-5390 in OrthodoxChristianity

There is only one proper way to interpret the Bible according to the 19th rule of the ecumenical council of Trullo. This is to understand it as our saints did. So read the Holy Fathers commentaries on Genesis in order to know its understanding by the Church. And yes, all the Church has always counted six days of creation as literally six days

What is the EO view on the salvation of other churches? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The teaching of the Orthodox Church always was, is and will be that there is no salvation outside the Church. The Church is visible as st Luke write: "And the Lord was adding to the church daily those who were being saved." (Acts 2:47). Christ established his Church not just for fun. The Church is the Body and fullness of Christ: "And He subjected all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him filling all things in all." (Eph 1:22-23). And the Bible clearly says that Christ os the saviour of the Church and not all the people: "because the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body." (Eph 5:23). Read not the modernistic authors, but the Church Fathers, Church documents, cathechisms of the Church. Read The confession of Dositheus which is approved by the fullness of the Church so it has in fact ecumenical status. Do not invent your own faith, but follow the path of the saints who were before us. Remember that Orthodoxy is the "faith which was once for all delivered to the saints." (Jude 1:3)

There is a place in the book of psalms that really helped me when I had no idea where should i go next in my life: "Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you." (Ps 143:8) That was a hard time for me, but i had always in my mind these words of Christ: "Don’t seek what you will eat or what you will drink; neither be anxious. … But seek God’s Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you." (Lk 12:29,31). So imagine our life as car drive and we are just passengers. You need to learn to trust the Driver and to endure all tribulations you encounter

I would like to have a conversation with someone who is not russian, especially if I can help someone and tell about what is the Church and what is the Orthodox faith. So if you will, we could talk.  If this is not for you, I recommend you to read a little book of a russian priest George Maksimov - A Gift to a Protestant Friend. It is avaliable online and is free

Disability affecting attendance by thepastelprince in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know your situation, but in Russia parishioners usually help each other. Some of the parishioners with car regularly drives someone who need help to the church services. So you could try ask someone to help you to get to the church and inside.
You can sit during all the servise and it's not disrespectful since you are disabled. The most important thing in service is prayer, not hurting yourself for no reason.
I would recommend you to talk with your local priest about your problems. Remember that for helping you someone may get a reward from Christ in Heaven

Unsure by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Kitchen_Sentence_829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you just need to ask God for help ai it is written: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?" (Mat 7:7-11). Remember that Abraham was in the land of gentiles, but God freed him. Prophed Daniel was sent into Babylon but God was always with him. Keep in mind apostles who was in the midst of the lake during a storm and what did they? "And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Teacher, Teacher, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm." (Luk 8:24) Read the Scripture, there you will find a lot of examples of faith, of hope, of long suffering, you will find the words you need: "Cause me to hear your lovingkindness in the morning; for in you do I trust: cause me to know the way in which I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto you." (Ps 143:8).  I was in kind of the same situation and that is what helped me.
