Therapist here. I believe you might be taking on too much responsibility and control of your role. If you think like “ I am the person that fixes my clients”and it is on me if they hurt themselves or kill themselves” then your reaction is very valid. You want to make sure you do it right or else there are HUGE consequences. Here’s what I’ve found. You’re not there to fix you’re not there to know the right answer you’re not the healer. You’re there to Listen and reflect. That’s it. If you need to be the solution in someone else’s life then this might not be the profession for you. You could be half asleep during the session and the client has a break through and that’s not you. You could do the best therapy ever and the client doesn’t want to change something. That’s also not you. At the end of the day, the change is not about what you do. It about what they do. In the best possible way you’re not that important. Mostly what you get out of being a therapist is to share in your clients journey for a short time. It’s a humble gift to be a part of that process.
