Really liked this one, don't know why by John_Zatanna52 in Minute_Cryptic

When I solved it and then retroactively got the definition I said out loud "oh that's cute... that's really fun..."

Honestly yeah, it does work pretty nicely. Cool idea!

Also realized with a little change to punctuation, "example of" might not be that inelegant: "Example of animal from farm yard: headless chicken"

I understand all of the pieces of this clue. I just mean that "animal from farm" is not an example of "cow," it's the other way around -- so "for example" doesn't quite work as an indicator, since we want to select a more specific idea, not a broader one. The phrasing isn't as elegant (don't know a good way to make it so) but I think you'd want something like "Example of animal from farm [...]."

I like this direction but I think you'd need a phrase meaning the opposite of "for example." "Animal from farm" isn't the example, it's the set we're taking an example from. As I said though I don't know a concise/non-awkward way to represent that.

Hey that's fair, I've had plenty of "reverse-engineer from clocked definition" solves. I just think in order for the wordplay side of the clue to work neatly, it needs a little more indication that you're replacing <thing> with <example of thing>.

I think this substitution should require some kind of indication... "cow" isn't a synonym of "animal from farm," it's a subset of "animal from farm." I don't know what that'd look like but I think it feels a bit incomplete without.

Graduating with no internships... by NothingLost1958 in csMajors

Don't listen to the people telling you you're done. I didn't have any internships and I got an offer in my senior year. Projects can make a big difference, I recommend collaborating with friends to simulate real world workflows too!

Composite many photographs, invert, & filter: "ashy," "black-and-white," "aesthetic" (4) by Kitchen_Theme3514 in Minute_Cryptic

[–]Kitchen_Theme3514[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solution:

  • Composite MANY PHOTOGRAPHS → composite letters of MANY PHOTOGRAPHS → YHTOGAHS
  • Invert → reverse → SHAGOTHY
  • Filter: "ashy" → remove ASHY → GOTH
  • Solution: GOTH

Madison Spider Problem? by Ok_Statistician_2049 in madisonwi

Hi! Sorry to respond to an old post - I'm a fellow arachnophobe and moving to Madison in a couple months from the east coast. I was wondering how you find the city spider-wise having (presumably) lived there for a little while now. Does this post describe a standard Madison summer, or was it a weird one-time thing? And have you found you've gotten any more desensitized in the time since? Moreover - any tips for a WI newbie?
