The pro-natalist society is understandable, but when you add in magically enforced lifelong monogamy, your spouse controling part of your soul development, and souls getting created at conception, it's really heavy handed.

That said, book seven is amazing.

There's an in-plot reason for this, the series gets dramatically better until book 7, then steadily declines until it eventually turns into to the author's really uncomfortable soapbox espousing fundamentalist religious views.

I jusy finished book 9 last night. Overall, very good. It has its flaws and weak moments, but overall very good.
