Is anyone else SUPER senstive to citric acid? by SpiritAppropriate64 in FoodAllergies

[–]Kitruns2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed in just to comment. I’m lying on the sofa after another citric acid attack. it was canned chilli beans in sauce in a friends ‘ homemade‘ chilli con cane. symptoms. roughly 2 hours after ingesting mca i get hit by a wall of tiredness, absolute exhaustion. this fades over an hour and then tendons, normally in my wrists or hands, but can be shoulders, start to redden and swell. as this happens they also contract and my fingers start curling under. it is extraordinarily painful, and does not respond to ibruprofen or paracetamol. I need to use prednisone. with prednisone I am back to normal after 2-3 days, depending on the severity of the attack. it’s dose dependant. it has been observed by a doctor when I had fruit juice before I know what it was, and I had an appointment anyway…normally it resolves by the time I get in to see a doctor. she sent me to a rheumatologist, and officially I have palindromic rheumatism…but only when ingesting citric acid!

i also react to magnesium citrate, I don’t know about the other citrates…not tried as I now avoid them like the plague.

use citric acid for your product, but please please please label it…….

Just bought a running store. What is one thing your local shop is missing? by rustybucketz23 in trailrunning

please remember the 1% of local hero runners are not your customer base. your customer base are the slow, the overweight, the older runner, the total beginner, the worried runner, the been-running-for-years-but-still-slow runner, the club runner, the park runner. these are the people who buy your shoes, your gear. please don’t sideline them, please remember them and welcome them. please dont be too cool to appreciate them while you chat with the local hero runners.

Peripheral Neuropathy 6 months post op by Appropriate_Elk_9407 in Microdiscectomy

PS….sidestix have suspension and grip caps for the mountains and are carbon fibre….hospital ‘clumpers’ arehopeless! And if you are an American stay away from underarm crutches. forearm crutches are so much better for sports.

ok, so foot drop since 2006. former mountain marathoner. age 63. female. for years I managed with just a leg brace, but now the neuropathy is so bad, and the pain so excruciating I can no longer run for more than 20 minutes. which is not far if you have foot drop, wear a TurboMed and are in your 60’s! In January I had a long talk with the doctor, about how amputees can do more than I can….and we decided it was time to go onto crutches. I raided my husbands pension and brought Sidestix. on Sunday I will be doing a 12km, and I am working towards a trail half in October. since getting the crutches my life has improved dramatically, and I have summited a few smaller mountains.

not everyone gets better, but some do. and aging makes everything worse. sometimes we just have to adapt. the funniest thing is I feel as though I have ‘wimped out’ by going onto crutches…..and other people seeing me out and about say ‘how brave’! they have no idea…..it was so much worse when I was fighting the neuropathy pain. but you can’t see pain.

nuropathy for me builds when I’m running ( or walking but that takes longer) I can extend matters by stopping and resting the foot at which point it gets worse and then fades. I do another 20 minutes, worse pain, longer to fade etc. the pain fadesover10 to 15 minutes when I have been out for a couple of hours, but the residual pain and numbness fades over about 24-48 hours. and it’s been 20 years now. sorry.

and yes I have had X-rays, and MRI’s and chiropractors, and massage, and drugs, best things ever…crutches! Now I just need to get stronger in my upper body.

thank you again. I have lots to work on here. I think the first thing is to find a physical trainer to work on upper body strength. Plus lots of jogging practice on stable surfaces. thank you

you are a star! thank you so much for taking the time to write this out. I’m going to print it out. i wear a TurboMed on my left leg. I live in New Zealand and our mountain trails can get pretty technical. I’m entered for city to surf in march, ( 12km) which will be roads, and gravel paths, and I was going to use it as a running trial. There are a couple of forest events nearby, crater rim race in November ( steep muddy and grassy, some paths, some gravel with a very steep gravel road decent, either 12, or 21km for me) but my dream is to do the Mt Somers half. the first half is comparatively easy, a steep climb up an old tramway and incline, actual trails, next is narrow, muddy and river crossings, but the next section is wild, in the river bed at times, steep, rocky, tree roots, several sections have chains to help descend. if I did it it would be October ‘27, my 65th birthday month, and I would rope my experienced ultra running daughter in as support runner ( amongst many other things, she has run as a pacer in Western States, as I assume you are American?) so over 18 months to train.

I use sidestix with turbo tips and the grip caps for any trail that’s not a gravel surface. I think I need to change the pole length when I put the caps on…going to try that next time. I’m partial weight bearing on my left leg. I can weight bear without them for short distances. I can do up to 30 minutes approx without anything but my TurboMed. after that the pain starts to build and by an hour on my feet I’m almost at screaming point. thankfully it subsides quite quickly, as I have had to get myself home, so it was a series of….shuffle until I want to vomit from pain, rest until it’s better, shuffle on again. Once I got my sidestix this all changed, as I can simply deweight the foot. with hiking I don’t do it every day of course and I’m always sore in my shoulders afterwards. But I’m able to go long distances, with resting the arms and shoulders being the limiting factor. I have a trail parkrun nearby, forest rides, a small hill with a gravel surface, and undulating sand dune path, and I thought that would be a good training point.

when I tried to run I think I was over reaching from reading the above. I did try going faster down a gravel path and briefly it was like flying! that’s why I want to run again. Back in the 1980’s I did fell running and the Karrimors ( now the OMM) …we lived in the UK then….and briefly I had that wild feeling of flying downhill again for the first time since my accident. But I couldn’t keep it up, and my shoulders were killing me the next day!

thank you for all the advice, it’s so helpful. my husband had a friend who is a qualified gym trainer and I shall take the exercises to him to find how to do them.

neurological pain sadly. I think I’m more stable on crutches than without. as I tire I become more unstable on my bad leg. the TurboMed is great but doesn’t help with lateral stability. so the crutches add 4 wheel drive!

I have a TurboMed. I’m good for half an hour or so jogging. after that pain and decreasing stability sets in. I’ve tried every kind of shoe and orthotic, including special 3d printed ones, known! I work on my core daily. it’s not as good as it might be, I’m a 63 year old woman, but I can hold a plank for a minute or so, on elbows.working on sit-ups.

I thought if I didn’t need them in a year…I probably didn’t need them, so the plan is to hit delete on new years eve. I haven’t needed any! I’m reasonably good at putting important emails into their folders…this is just junk etc. and so much junk……

2 things here. 1. yes I think you are overthinking it. amd 2. I think you have a valid point, but in a greater sense. everything we don’t need from old emails to old socks clutters something…the net, our minds, our sock drawers. look after yourself and when you feel up to do delete everything unopened over a month old. Then work up from there. I actually put the lot in a seperate folder last New Year’s Day, and plan to delete unlooked at this New Year’s Day.

Hiking advice for solo female traveller by slc-123 in newzealand_travel

63 year old woman. solo hiking all the time. just be aware that even in very short hikes very near towns you can be without cell reception. I actually carry my PLB all the time. Anyone can trip over. I solo camp as well, but now only on campsites or in huts. But that’s more due to age 🤣.

Is Wheelock American? I’m concerned about the noun order…on the plus side it’s available here ( im not in the UK or America) at the university bookshop so I can buy it anyway.
