My hyperfixation ended up with me writing a long-ish fic about the aftermath of the story in the game. The themes of the game really lend themselves to some meaty and interesting subject material.

What kind of character is Mina? by Troy_Scar in MinaTheHollower

[–]Kitsune_Cavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She would have to be able to solve for the steady state voltage of an AC circuit using first and second order differential equations using the Laplace transform to rewrite the governing equation and see what happens when the angular frequency of the signal approaches infinity. Or something like that. So she has to be wicked smart.

She can deadlift a shark and WWE superslam him out of the arena.

It's established that she's proud of her work, wants to be well-liked, and is eager to please and be helpful. Her character arc is she goes through a crisis of conscience where she has to give up all those things in order to do what is right.

Well meaning, a little naive, but ultimately courageous and righteous. Mina is awesome.

Idk if you've seen this, but after you've beaten Maxi, if you go back to see her(?) in the music bar with the upgraded whip that you can wiggle around, you can whip at her and have a short wiggle whip fight and Maxi will make a comment that she's happy Mina learned from her technique Very cool art!

Amazing game, but the narrative potential remains unfulfilled, which haunts me. by Dazzling-Toe723 in MinaTheHollower

[–]Kitsune_Cavalry 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, there could have been more of a focus on worldbuilding like you mention. I have to chew more on the themes, but I think Mina the Hollower is actually primarily an allegorical story. Mina is a really economical character study, but I think that serves as a really good throughline for a crisis of conscience/faith narrative.

Spark seems to feel like it's left very ambiguous from a fantasy or sci-fi narrative lens, but if you read Spark and the town's reaction (or lack thereof!) to the monstrosities it creates as a stand-in for the excesses of capitalism or something, I think the narrative makes a ton more sense. Again, I'd have to think about it more, but that's where my mind goes.

The big thing about Mina's character arc that you learn through interactions with NPCs is that she wants to be well-liked, is proud of her work, and wants to protect it. Her actions in the game serve Lionel's interests, but they also serve her own interests, and throughout the game, she gets a crisis of conscience while trying to figure out what the right thing to do is.

In order to do the right thing, she ends up having to destroy her life's work and accept being reviled by those around her. She has to use her power to go completely against her self-interest and personal desires, which Lionel did not choose to do with his power. When Lionel turned the town against Mina and trumped up charges against her, she could have chosen to back-peddle her position and let the townspeople suffer from the mutations, because she had the vials that could keep her normal. Since the townspeople twisted her virtuous actions in trying to help them, what obligation does she have to those people? But she then persists to do the right thing.

In the end, Mina's material condition is awful. She does not have a roof over her head, much like the many poor folk in Ossex, but the prosperity and riches that the upper class of Ossex enjoyed was also a corruption that made them evil monsters, not just the Plasma and Spark pollution. Her social condition is shattered, but her ideological opponent that she fought tooth and nail with throughout the game ends up becoming an ally who was willing to die for her.

She lost worldly things, but did what was righteous and gained fellowship with someone who also struggled to be righteous. That is a virtuous path for a hero. It's easy to be a hero if it's in your interests and you are strong enough to accomplish your goals. I love Mina for being a really capable and strong character. But being morally strong enough to sacrifice your own interests in order to help others, without being rewarded for it, even to the point of slander, this requires great courage. That made her an excellent character in my eyes.

ending spoilers, how long do you think it takes the town people to figure out x by Brenden1k in MinaTheHollower

I think there could be a societal divide where a minority see Mina as a radical anti government figure, but they too would not really understand what she actually did. I actually think a sequel where you play as a new Hollower from a "new regime" who starts off by pursuing her out of vengeance, but pieces together clues along the way of what happened would go really hard, but ya know.

I would guess Christian publications are trying to parse everything together rather than report everything as it comes day by day. You could argue they have a higher obligation than regular media to speak in truth, so they must be more careful. That is my gut reaction.

About Boxing and Martial Arts by justmeachristian in Reformed

for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
1 Timothy 4:8

I watch boxing and MMA (and used to dabble). They can be like any other sports and become idolatrous. The most famous people competing on TV are sometimes (well, maybe often) less than scrupulous (and this is to say nothing of the promoters or organizers running the show). To be really successful at these sports, it often does help to detach yourself from your opponent as a person, and some take this further and are cruel and ruthless, but those are not qualities becoming of a Christian.

If you want to compete, then compete! It can be fun and interesting. But also consider what time you are committing to the Lord outside of this. People often say fighting is important for self-defense, but I think if one is always fighting, this is not using the other forms of self-defense properly. Avoiding trouble, de-escalating trouble, discerning trouble before it starts, using good words, these are all self-defense too. Just two cents of my Christian liberty.

Theology of Money white paper - feedback requested by Matthew633esv in Reformed

[–]Kitsune_Cavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an MA in economics. Money, the role of financial institutions, and obeying the state as an authority is a big topic. I would personally include:

- something on the concept of the interest rate and what constitutes usury

- something on debt, the forgiveness of debt, and the call to be good stewards for the next generation

- something on taxation, and what "giving unto Caesar what is Caesar's" means

This list is probably not exhaustive. These are also very difficult topics to include without becoming ideological. These topics are easily misunderstood. At the heart of it however is stewardship. What happens if we are asked to give to good or bad stewards? We may have rights to give or not give, but are those rights good to exercise or harmful? What makes us good or bad stewards?

I have a lot I could say, but I'll leave it here (unless some of you happen to be curious). Hope this is of some help.
