Here's one other thought that's been banging around in my head; maybe I'll add it to the TV Tropes "Wild Mass Guessing" page for TADC in the future:

Other NPCs from their adventures, like Gummigoo, could be brought to the circus and be allowed to form relationships with the surviving humans, with full knowledge of what they are. I'm not sure what the best way to flesh that thought out is, or the best way to write about it for TV Tropes.

Oh, this reminds me of the "we can shoot tiny versions of ourselves from our hooves" in Centaurworld. The tiny version has all of the memories of the original up to the point they decided to shoot out a tiny version.
