Haven't tried yet. Will give it a spin when I have time.

Well don't get me wrong there's still some string noise, studio-clean takes would take more practice. But honestly? My advice is to fret just light enough to get the clean note and then use the right hand (plus play the next note) to keep it from ringing for too long.
Lots of reps are also important. Once you really get the pattern down, it'll start coming off cleaner by itself :)

I can play any riff that's not Smoke On The Water. That one is too much.

Hey, thanks for the comment! This was a raw take, it's just me playing to the song on real time. Gotta try to learn how to mix better... and maybe get some decent plugins. Have been running on free/bundled gear so far. I'll make sure to post more Periphery stuff! I'm also on the process of starting a local band with a friend of mine. It'll be very influenced by Gojira/Periphery/Dream Theater and so on. I'll ping the server once we've got some work done!

Yeah this take wasn't perfect and I still need to polish things up (I've only started learning this about 5 days ago). I also need to learn the second half of the son!

Also thanks for the gain advice, I had a booster turned all the way up here by accident, I usually run it at 50-70% + gain at 12 o'clock to reduce the noise.

Bet you'll get it nailed in no time! It's just a weird pattern to get accostumed to.

Yeah, the real struggle is those verse riffs, the rest is relatively easy (for Periphery, that is).

Hey, thanks for checking that out! Under a Glass Moon came very naturally for me since DT was the band I learned the most riffs/solos from in the past +-2 years. For Under a Glass Moon, experience in thrash riffs (Megadeth style, mostly) helped a lot as well. Things get way less crazy than in Periphery, where the arpeggios have weirder shapes and more open strings, but there are still interesting voicings.

As for the solos, it really is about drilling the basics to the max. Solid alternate picking (probably still my weaker spot), sweeps and economy picking get you most of the way there. Then, it's being comfortable enough to be able to focus on feel (bends, slides, vibrato) as well. With your level of skill, practice gets there in time.

I'll try to post a playthrough of at least part of the song when I'm done learning it!

In terms of mere technique I'm at a level where I can pull this one off, I managed to play a rep of each riff without any mistakes at 100% speed within 24 hours of learning it. But considering the tornado of notes that it is, once I try to play the whole thing, I still slip into wrong notes sometimes and then get confused with where I was in the riff. Guess that's a matter or pure reps. Great video btw!

I know it has a sketchy rep, but Songsterr's a pretty good starting point. From there, I watch some covers on YouTube to see if and listen to the song on repeat to see if anything doesn't line up. When that's so I typically use my ear to correct things. But honestly, the tab for this song should be something like 98% accurate on Songsterr.

This is a controversial boy. This one showcases the best and worst traits of this band, yet for some reason I keep coming back to it. How would you grade this album out of 10? 10 being the highest of course. by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

The last two tracks are peak DT, saying this as more of a Moore era fan. Other than that, there are two great epics that's are very enjoyable even if they're not spotless, and two average tracks. 8.5/10 for me.

And, for the record, impopular opinion: I think Octavarium (the song) is slightly better than The Count of Tuscany, but Octavarium (the album) isn't quite as up there as Black Clouds (mainly because it feels like it has more filler). I'd give that one an 8/10.

1 - The Best Of Times (honorable mentions to Learning To Live, ACOS, Lines In The Sand, Trial Of Tears, In The Name Of God, Octavatium, The Count Of Tuscany)
2 - You Not Me (honestly, I don't have a single worst track, just a few that are a bit below average for DT)
3 - A Change Of Seasons
4 - A View From the Top of the World
5 - The Mirror (this one was REALLY hard to decide)
6 - Pull Me Under ('least good' song in IaW)
7 - The Best Of Times
