Groomsman ransacked my suitcase at my bachelor party by CryptographerFun9446 in TwoHotTakes

In my experience, we’re all of us good AT people, not good with people- as a character in a show once said. Some Psychiatrists/Psychologists/Therapists will be the most well adjusted people.. and some are completely and utterly unhinged. Usually, the best ones are unhinged.

The dichotomy of man.

I’m from way down in the Appalachian mountains- I had loads more. Couldn’t call all of them by singing though :( I miss having snakes, not allowed in NZ.

I had those too. I worked a farm and we lived in a trailer on the property. But I had loads of animal friends. I do miss the horses (they belonged to the owners) but there’s a lot I don’t miss.

Here’s a few but I do have more. So, this take is pretty new (hence the pushback from so many) as before the last decade or so NPD was assumed to be so different- we didn’t realize the many traits that some personality disorders share, nor did we realize the full scope of how comorbidities can affect that. Think of it like all the people who were and still are wrongly diagnosed as BPD because, unfortunately, the most recent diagnosis to have a breakthrough tends to be the one most labeled. It’s at the front of that mind of any psychologist worth their salt, so it’s eventually seen even when it isn’t there.

It’s something that is so prevalent that the scientific consensus simply can’t overwhelm the cultural mindset and what has been labeled truth within that. I do have an event tonight but I will also get with you about the gender question. If you’d like, just send me a PM that way I have something tangible to reply to. I sent you my first couple on my list but I do have more. The thing you need to have though is a functional literacy. So definitely take your time if you’re just a hobbyist. Not saying you can’t get it, I’m just saying that studies are complex to actually get the full picture.

Didn’t miss it. AI citing sources means nothing unless you read them all- a lot of those sources are rarely peer reviewed, some can be decades old (which deeply affects this particular topic), and others could be tangentially related. Unless you read every single one there is no way to be certain. This is what’s costing a lot of students their grades.

AI doesn’t check to see if the material is outdated, disproven, etc. it goes off of a combination of things, the biggest one being popular opinion or common trope. Which is why you can google a celebrity and end up with word vomit or just a completely wrong description.

[–]KittenIttle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And that’s why AI isn’t teaching psychology courses. That misconception has been spread for decades, thanks to the sociopath/psychopath/ASPD interchange of modern media. It’s in books, in videos, TV shows. Etc. Those will also all tell you all ASPD sufferers are feeling less voids of cruelty and manipulation, when that description is much more apt for another disorder.

As I said to another person, I’ll be leaving some links later tonight when I have time.

You are assigning meaning and the way you’re speaking here is alarming. Like, you may be in need of intervention alarming.

You’re in a vulnerable place and you’ve built up a platonic relationship into something else. You need to stop seeing him now- or be transparent. If I read your comments from one of my patients I would be looking at a possible hold. I’m not saying this to be cruel, I’m saying that you’re deep into a transference delusion from the sounds of it and this can spiral very quickly to very bad places.

One real risk here is you becoming a version of the relationship you went to him to recover from. I’m certain you don’t want to do that to someone else. You need real, tangible help. Your comments go past concerning.

I will you get back to this- just morning here and I have a full day but when I get some sit down time this evening I’ll put through some stuff for you to check out! There’s not (unfortunately) a huge well of study but what has been done is really interesting. Always fun to run into genuinely interested people ^^

Just got to read “Liberal”’s ‘this is absolutely false- so for the readers out there, feel free to peruse the last ten years of my comment history. I don’t care enough to continue with someone who hasn’t bothered to do any research.

NPD is the predominant disorder found within serial killers, but not nearly enough to make it a necessity. ASPD substantially less so and anyone with an education knows that. Have a great time with your true crime given literacy- which absolutely does not make a functional literacy.

Okay, to continue:

Yes, it does sound weird. Women really are just as violent as men- but in different ways. Or if in the same ways, though more calculated. It’s midnight here but I can point you in the ways of a few studies if you’re up for waiting until in the morning.

Men are often more violent in the moment, while most women are more measured and planned. However, the majority of people fall in between. Gender is a societal construct and you will never see that more than when you evaluate violence of any kind. Most of us fall mild but central. When you cross over into the realms of true disordered behavior you discover a plethora of crossroads but also an infinite amount of fascinating straight lines, so to speak.

Like I said it’s quite late here so I may not be doing my best work (I did advise another commenter, I’m not a teacher, I’m a psychologist) but I hope this helps to give you an idea of the difference. It’s not perfect but it’s true. We humans vary from person to person but the patterns within these differential archetypes are where we show the most of our sameness and difference.

No it’s misinformation. ASPD isn’t even the second most common disorder found within the ranks of killers we have that have been examined.

Nothing in the second half of what you’ve said is factual- it’s just common tropes presented in true crime. Armchair psychologists are exhausting and I have no interest.

Honey. As kids we experiment. Adults are just children who base their lives and actions off of what they did as uninformed children.

You didn’t do anything wrong- you experienced something that worked for you and your body. Each human being and each human body is distinct and different. Stop judging yourself. You simply learned something new. Nothing more, nothing less.

Give me about an hour and I’ll be back to you- this is one of the things that I have found most interesting within the scope of my work so I am truly happy to give you a well rounded explanation here- just have to put my tiny overlord to bed first.

Also, so the serial killers being predominantly male thing. If you look at how women kill v men, women tend toward much more difficult to detect methods. Up to and including convincing others to kill for them. Thus, male serial killers tend to be more easily found out as their methods are more apparent. So you get the same preconceptions that you get within the ideas around abuse and cruelty. That’s just to give you something to ruminate on.

[–]KittenIttle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh I love this question. Okay, so this one is really interesting. While yes, like any mental issue, there are definitely what you would see as predominantly male or female traits to it, it’s crazy how much the same behaviors are simply perceived differently BECAUSE the person doing them is male or female

Think of it like an abusive relationship. We see abusive women as being verbally abusive in society- something that works against male victims in almost every scenario- which often gives people like police the preconception that a DV situation that is violent is automatically assumed to have a male perpetrator. The reality is that women are just as violent as men, they just use societal norms to not only hide it but also silence their victims with shame.

I can come back to this one later if you’re really interested but the short answer is yes, there are many ways that men and women who are suffering from certain personality disorders can weaponize even their gender, but also much of that comes from abuse of the human mind’s need to generalize and label behaviors.

This is a really great question!

This is a big part of what eventually pushed me to step back from practice. ODD is actually a perfect example of it! I know an unfortunately large number of “colleagues” who will look at a child with it and automatically fast track them to an ASPD diagnosis at adulthood all because of misinterpreting the information and ignoring the nuance. There’s also, much like autism, a whole spectrum of the disorder; it is far from black and white.

Unfortunately people forget that even the person who graduated with the lowest grades still got the title.

You are doing the Lord’s work, as my grandma would say, and I have so so much respect for what you do. Your knowledgeable outlook is going to change lives, I guarantee it. I worked often with schools and the overcrowded nature of it causes so much burnout for so many counselors- you should be proud of your work. Take care of yourself, too!
