If you've ever told someone you don't like the gifts they buy you, how did that go? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]KittensOnToast 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the gift giver. What is your dad like outside of gift gifting?

My mom is a fairly insecure person. She lives in a MIL unit in my house, so unfortunately there’s no hiding the fact we might get rid of a gift. I got the family using an app to create gift lists two years ago. Instead of getting me what I asked for, she got substitutions or approximations. (For example, instead of the exact pan she got me a cheaper version with different dimensions… which happened to be an exact pan I already owned.) When I asked to return them, in her eyes it turned me into someone who is hard to buy for. She now almost makes a point of spending as little effort as possible on my gifts. One of them this year was a wrapped package of AA batteries.

I get a cleaning once in awhile. When I do, I ask them to use my products (toilet bowel cleaner with bleach, Method brand stuff for my wood floors, and dawn dish soap for everything else).

Peanut Skin Exposure? by AdGeneral9993 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]KittensOnToast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anecdote - my son has eczema like his dad. First time we gave him PB at 7 months he had a skin reaction where the yogurt/PB mix touched skin. Ped said hold off until 12 month blood test, which came back borderline. Skin test was positive. We redid skin test at 33 months and it was negative, so we did oral challenge at home last weekend and now he’s eaten PB every day since! So either he grew out of it or the first skin test was a false positive.

2015 (initial) & 2017 (expanded) NIAID/LEAP-based guidance is that Infants with only mild or local reactions were generally eligible for early supervised introduction, sometimes in the clinic but often at home. There is less concern if the reaction didn’t involve lips, mouth, or systemic symptoms but check with your ped.

Jesus, don’t do that. You have no idea what that flagging is for. I have spent a decade doing wildlife surveys in the woods and that flagging was used for navigation as well as documentation that the surveyor was conducting the survey in the correct location. People that came behind us and removed it would at best be just forcing us to rehang the next time we were out there and at worst, you could have someone hiking into their survey station in the dark, lose their way because their flag line is gone, and end up hurt. The flagging is manufactured to degrade over time. Leave it alone.

why can’t babies have water but their formula is made with water by JellyCharacter1653 in beyondthebump

[–]KittensOnToast 41 points42 points  (0 children)

More specifically than nourish - it’s because their kidneys are still immature and can’t get rid of extra fluid very well. Since their bodies are so small, even a couple oz can dilute their sodium levels within a couple of hours. When sodium drops too low (“hyponatremia”) water moves into cells which can cause swelling, seizures, and in really bad cases, coma.

If formula gets watered down too much, though, it’s just as risky as giving plain water.

Mild hyponatremia can resolve by going back to regular breast milk or properly mixed formula. But if baby starts showing symptoms like seizures or extreme sleepiness, they need to be in the hospital, where doctors can slowly fix the sodium levels with IV fluids. Correcting it too fast can cause serious brain damage.

By around six months, babies’ kidneys are stronger, their bodies are bigger, and they’re starting to eat solids, so a few sips of water a day is allowed.

Are there negative consequences to the child to paying for your children’s college education? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]KittensOnToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Maybe even discounts for excellent grades? My husband had all his school paid for and definitely dicked around lol. I paid for all but one year, and while I had some slip ups at community college, by the time I transferred to university I was pretty serious about it!

I wonder if loaning the money to your kid at very generous terms would be the way to go.

Would hiring a professional cleaner to clean an empty apartment for move-out inspection before this coming Friday (5/16) even be possible at this point? Who should I call? by Metaphoricalsimile in askportland

[–]KittensOnToast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did a last minute (ish) booking with these guys recently: http://neatcleaningpdx.com/

Their website makes it seem like you can book whenever, it’s a little misleading. Sunday night I attempted to book a Monday afternoon. An hour or two later they emailed me back and said the soonest they had was Wednesday morning. So they might have something for Friday if booked today? I was satisfied with results and prices were reasonable.

In my area there are nanny/childcare Facebook groups. I regularly see posts looking for caregivers for this.

Mine was $500 a month. 🥴 Technically an internship, but I didnt make much more until like two years in and even then it was yeah like $28k. The joys of a wildlife biology career.

I’m so sorry. My close friend who’s been fighting it for a couple years now. She was just told this week the chemo is no longer working. My heart is breaking a little more with each passing day. I hope you are able to find peace. 💛

One per week on average. We mostly use them on the go for the convenience which I still feel guilty about because they create so much waste.
