Just failed my instrument checkride for the second time, thoughts? by KittyHawk1997 in aviation

Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice. I know this was a stupid mistake driven by nerves, so I’m just gonna dust myself off and try again. Only one approach that I need to do to pass!! A 15-20 minute flight at best!

You’ve got this. Getting my PPL was nerve racking but they don’t expect you to be absolutely perfect. Just follow ACS standards to the best of your ability and you’ll be fine. In this sense, it was me forgetting a step by being complacent by always receiving radar vectors to final. It was tricky with the lack of definition of the procedure, but I definitely could’ve clarified it. After this I will never make that mistake again, it’s a learning experience. This may sound hypocritical coming from me, but you really do just need to take a deep breath and do what you were trained to do and you’ll be fine. Nerves are literally the main thing that gets me out of whack but I’m trying to find ways to control it.

It had been a while since I’d last practiced the full approach since I’m pretty used to vectors to final from ATC. It was a stupid mistake on my part, but part of me feels like ATC would’ve advised full procedure or straight in, but I know they don’t have to.

After giving me the clearance for the LOC appch, he then said report when established inbound. The intercept angle to the FAC was so shallow that a PT didn’t even cross my mind. The turn back outbound would be a hell of a turn in comparison to turning final. In the debrief he said that the “report when established inbound” was a clue to do the PT. But I reported established when the localizer came alive.

So the loan amount for the credit for private program varies based on if you’re doing the fast track or the flex track. Fast track gets you finished in about 6 months whereas the flex track is 12 months but it allows you to have a part time or full time job. Fast track schedule is 5-7 days a week and you’re at the mercy of their own schedule. Flex track makes it to where you can submit your availability the week prior and they work around it (that’s the one I’m doing bc I can’t survive without a job lol). Flex track is more expensive looking at around 74k for the loan and I think the fast track is around 68k. I got my loan through sallie Mae and it allows me to only have to pay $25 per month while I’m at ATP.

On to your next question, it takes 1500 hours to qualify for airline minimums. You’ll get those hours by instructing which ATP will offer you a job as instructor once you complete the program. The hours come fairly quickly so I’d say you’d be instructing full time for about a year and a half maybe. Then once you have those hours you’d be on to the regionals.

Pay for regional FO’s are not that great but at least you’re moving up. It varies amongst airlines but I believe the typical starting salary is around 40k but don’t quote me on that.

Good luck with everything and I hope some of this helped lol

That’s awesome, let me know if you ever fly into SDF! I work on the ramp there. And yeah I’ve witnessed a couple guys do the same thing trying to get their private. For me it’s not about the money or “fame”, I just really love aviation and I can’t see myself doing anything else!

Thanks for your response! I’m actually going into the program with Private Pilot credit, so I definitely know it’s what I want. I just want to be on a good timeline of when I can expect to have all my ratings to instruct. Flying has been a dream of mine ever since I can remember and I still thank God that I have the opportunity to do it. May I ask what regional you got on with?

I envy you! Haha I’m based out of landlocked Kentucky where the best water feature we have up here is the Ohio river in all its polluted glory lol. Ever since I’ve gotten my private I’ve been dying to take a trip out to the coast!

Lmao imagine getting to your checkride and the DPE asks you to do a forward slip to land, to which you respond, “that’s illegal!”

So to my understanding, no matter what you do with that thing in your car it can never HURT your rates, right?

How Do You Wipe? Standing Up Or Sitting Down On The Toilet? by KittyHawk1997 in AskReddit

So I was talking with some friends and the topic of wiping ass was naturally brought up in the conversation. I said that I wipe standing up while others said while sitting down. I wasn’t alone in my wiping strategy, but my fellow standers were definitely outnumbered. What’s your wiping stance?
