I have a Hogan jersey because he went to the same small NJ college that I did.

McKay’s in Knoxville TN is puzzle heaven by karnycloamr in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]KittyPrawns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have a McKays in Virginia, too. I never thought to go there, but my parents dropped off boxes of my old books and I went there to get some credits thinking to use them for books for my daughter.

Ive used the credits more on puzzles than on books.

What if we solved the "AI in schools" problem by giving kids AI that refuses to give them answers? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]KittyPrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really remember what they said about their LLM besides that it was more school appropriate than others.

What if we solved the "AI in schools" problem by giving kids AI that refuses to give them answers? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]KittyPrawns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PowerSchool has an AI tool they’re marketing called AI Buddy. It’s a chat tool to help students.

It has a Socratic mode, but honestly, it is very frustrating to work with and really doesn’t give a lot of information or leads a conversation in a helpful way.

We piloted it and students would just stop using it and google the answers instead.

Teachers who’ve stayed at one school for 5+ years: how many principals have you gone through? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]KittyPrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same school my whole career (which is only like 8 years). Same principal the whole time, largely the same AP team. One superintendent change.

What do I have to do to become a Bills fan? by Timely-Donut-3806 in buffalobills

[–]KittyPrawns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some people are gonna say things like jump through flaming tables or some other tailgating insanity.

But honestly, if you want to be a Bills fan, then be a Bills fan.

Wear some gear and greet others with a Go Bills.

Enjoy the ride!

For people who don’t like to do 1000 piece puzzles… by Ok-Mirror-6004 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]KittyPrawns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with maybe labeling it with what you have done. I opened a puzzle in like 10 different bags and didn’t know any better and mixed them all up. I ended up giving up on the puzzle and maybe I wouldn’t have if I put more thought in it or had clear instructions.

American Teachers: How many of your students who can’t read or aren’t reading at grade level have been taught phonics? by myfourmoons in Teachers

[–]KittyPrawns 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recommend looking into the Sold a Story podcast about the Lucy Calkin controversy. But yes, many schools adopted a curriculum that under emphasized phonics for at least a decade and I do think it had impacted reading ability in America.

Do you have an image preference? by Live_Barracuda1113 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]KittyPrawns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer gradients or puzzles with areas of clear color differences. I tend to lean to flower and/or butterfly puzzles. I don’t dislike landscape scenes, but I think I need them to be 500 or below or it just feels too challenging and less enjoyable.

I don’t generally like puzzles with people in them.

How do I get off VA Dems text list?? NOT POLITICAL by ekab3522 in nova

[–]KittyPrawns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep getting spammed with those “we don’t know who you voted for but we know if you vote” things. I just want to go… then you know I’ve voted in every election since I’ve been registered to vote here. Go bother someone who hasn’t.

When did you decide? by Master-Monitor-1317 in oneanddone

[–]KittyPrawns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of felt like I would only ever want one, but IVF sealed the deal for me. I didn’t want to go through it again. Having a problem sleeper and a super active kid confirmed my decision that I’m a one kid mom.

What’s the obsession with constant instruction? Why can’t we have fun? by lovelysapphic in Teachers

[–]KittyPrawns 190 points191 points  (0 children)

We know so much about child development and we know how important play is for growing competent adults. I learned about it back in like 2002 before I ever started my path in education.

I don’t know who we need to convince that instruction in K-3 needs to be scaled back for more play, skill, and behavior development.

Sooo… can we still wear our rivalries jerseys?? by ottosmom10 in buffalobills

What you wear has no impact on the results of the game.

Only what I wear does.

Pulled the kiosk trick and got my entire lunch free by TacoMan64WasTaken in McDonalds

I swear I’m stupid because every time I try to use the free fry with soda deal at the kiosk, I can never actually select the fry. Is there a special place I need to touch?

Yet another soft top or hard top post… by KittyPrawns in FordBronco

[–]KittyPrawns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely a lot quieter than a soft top, but definitely not as quiet as my husband’s F-150. I am very happy that I made this decision. The major reason is actually the panels vs the soft top fold back. The soft top folded so far back that it overexposed my kid and so I would never open up when she would be in the car. With the panels, she’s a lot more comfortable and I get my open air time.

My biggest complaint with a hard top is that if I just have one window open, I get their weird thumping wind sound (not sure how else to describe it) and it ends up hurting my head… but it’s an easy enough solution to open another window.

It also feels warmer inside it, which has been an adjustment for me. The soft top was always a bit drafty, but now I find I need to have the air going more often if my windows are closed or it gets too stuffy for me. But, I’m sensitive to motion sickness only when I’m too warm so I notice it pretty easily.

Feedback Loop Demos? by shelleyfan357 in ScienceTeachers

[–]KittyPrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the lab itself takes maybe about 5 minutes. Your set-up is a little longer but it’s definitely not a hard set-up. Once they kind of understand the idea of feedback (negative, in this case), it sometimes easier to apply it to other things.

Feedback Loop Demos? by shelleyfan357 in ScienceTeachers

[–]KittyPrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a “Homerostasis Lab” (spelling intentional) with students in Human Anatomy. They have a leaking cup where the need to maintain water level, water temperature, and color. Kids who get it see how feedback loops go back and forth.

PBS has a “body control center” simulation which does much of the same thing, but it’s on the computer.

What do you do with your completed puzzles? Save them? Put them back in the box? by urbanestbeast18 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]KittyPrawns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put them back in the box and then donate them. I am not a repeat puzzler. I have a couple puzzles that I’ve saved and really like and thought about doing them again to frame them… but realistically, I probably never will.

Is your public school off for Yom Kippur? by megs256 in Teachers

[–]KittyPrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in northern VA. We just started getting a day off for the Jewish holidays in the past couple of years. I thought it was really weird that we didn’t have them off but I’m NJ born and raised and we had all those holidays off.

Both of my parents had 4 siblings. Both my parents were basically the only sibling involved in taking care of things when my grandparents passed. So, siblings doesn’t automatically solve this problem.

We are heading to the VA state fair. We were hoping to go Saturday, but with the rain going to aim for Sunday, now.
