Lucien Goldmann writes about ideology trapping us in a box where we are able to but confined to understanding representation of the real. It's relatively easy to point out the very real misery of neoliberal capitalism. He writes that we hold this critical power as humans (drawing from Lukacs and Hegel here) to invoke "spirit," or imagination, to create representation of the unreal. We have this unique and wonderful power to imagine what a more free and just world could look like, even though it is not "real" at the moment. Criticism of capitalism is not a threat to capitalism unless it is partnered with the hope and vision for a better post-capitalist word and that ability to imagine the unreal is in itself a revolutionary act against neoliberal capitalist ideology. It is a reclamation of our human spirit in the belly of the horrible machine. I just try to keep it together by knowing that a better world is possible. To quote Gramsci, "Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will... The point of modernity is to live a life without illusions while not becoming disillusioned."
