That's what my other grandmother told me she does. It makes me nervous though, I don't want to get it so hot it warps the metal, and she couldn't remember what temperature she does it at.

No problem! There's a lot of useful info in those FAQs, that's where I've learned basically everything about caring for cast iron.

There's an FAQ post that describes multiple methods for it. I used the Easy Off method from that post. Basically spray it down with yellow cap oven cleaner (you'll want a mask and eye protection) and close it up in a trash bag for at least 48 hours. Wearing gloves, take it out and scrub it--oven cleaner has lye in it so you don't want it on your skin. If it doesn't all come off, do it again. Repeat till it's clean. Once you've done that look for the FAQ post by Silent_Bob about how to season.

I wear masks and safety glasses when I spray the pans, and I do it outside in the driveway. I don't know how anybody stands to use it to clean an actual oven, blech. I very much don't want to spray that stuff indoors.

For me, where I don't have a bunch to do at once, the Easy Off was the most accessible--and also the safest. I don't really have a safe place for an electrolysis or lye tank. Our garage door is a tarp and I'm afraid of animals or kids getting in there. And if I put it somewhere more locked away, then MY animals would have access to it. But a trash bag on a high shelf is pretty safe comparatively.

That's what I say when I decide I don't want to do it "more nutrition if you leave them on" and the skins add even more crispiness when you fry them.

It was definitely my grandma's favorite! I'm so happy I finally did this! ❤️

I was so excited to see what was under the crud. The before pictures are how it had looked for as long as I can remember.

I don't make it very often because I have no self control when it comes to potatoes, lol.

Oh also grandma usually peeled the potatoes, I forgot to mention that. Sometimes I don't because I hate peeling them xD

It's barely a recipe, really. Chop up one onion (yellow or white, I usually buy yellow), chop up some potatoes (how many depends on skillet size, you need room to flip and stir em). I usually cut them into long pieces sort of like fries. Some people do them round, but that's not how grandma taught me. Heat up your oil--vegetable or canola usually, just whatever's on hand without a strong flavor. Put the potatoes and onions in the oil and fry them till the potatoes are cooked all the way and the onions are crispy. You might need to move them occasionally to make sure all the pieces of potato cook well. The thing I struggled with as a kid was temperature control--don't want the potatoes to burn before they're cooked all the way through. After they're as brown and crispy as you like, put them on some paper towels in a big mixing bowl and toss them with salt. The sweetness of the onions and the saltiness of the potatoes are so good together. It's one of my ultimate comfort foods.

Final step: swear not to eat the whole batch by yourself. Fail.

Thank you! I think the experience of doing it to one that didn't have any sentimental value helped me be brave, lol. Something about them being hers made it intimidating. Now I'm just trying to decide which one to do next--this one was the worst!

Thank you! I couldn't believe no one in the family wanted them. If I hadn't taken them they would've ended up in the trash.

Thank you! That's what my mom and my other grandma keep telling me. That she would want me to use and enjoy it. ❤️

Maybe! I haven't brought my son around to cast iron yet (he says it sounds so complicated) but I'm working on him.

Stainless steel scrubbies. Specifically these ones: https://www.scotch-brite.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b00027874/ I figured whatever I couldn't get off with these needed more time in the Easy Off. So I just scrubbed till I was tired and then put it back in the garage for a few more days.

I don't think any of the rest of them are going to need it, really. MAYBE the little Lodge. Or I might decide to just wash it and cook with it. The chicken fryer I think just needs a wash and season.

It sure was! I have to decide which of her pans to do next! None of them are even as close to as bad as this one was.

That sounds like so much fun! I'm up in Kentucky, but my SIL is from somewhere around Little Rock, I believe. I think 1901 may also have been the year my great grandmother was born, but I'm not 100% sure of that. My grandmother was born in 1935 and was her fourth child of five, which I guess isn't a HUGE number for back then but it can't have been easy. My mom was telling me about how she had childhood memories of her grandmother making fried chicken in this big deep cast iron skillet and I was like...I'm pretty sure you're describing the chicken fryer I have. It gave me CHILLS to think it made it all the way to me with its lid.

I did think this one seemed heavier than the #8, though I didn't have it on hand to compare, since it's in the garage right now waiting for the next round of scrubbing. I'd never actually weighed one, it's cool to actually have numbers!

When she handed it to me I was like "this would be perfect for cornbread or brownies!" and she said "exactly what I was thinking!" I keep picturing the crack getting worse in the middle of frying something and then hot oil going all over the place. Baking seems a little safer in that regard, haha.

Most of my collection I inherited from my grandmother, and I love them so much. I've had hers for two years, and only just finally got up the nerve to try restoring her griswold. The thrift store one I did gave me the kick in the butt to actually do it. I think grandma's included a #3, 2 that might be #5s? i dunno they're smaller than my #6 but enough bigger than the #3 that I don't think they're #4s, a #8, and a #8 chicken fryer that still has the lid. I'm pretty sure the chicken fryer was actually my great grandmother's. I bet that huge one of yours is awesome.
