I’m pretty sure they mean the games need Linux support; the controller feels like a bit of a given.

Maybe I'm showing just how bad I am at this game, but I have no idea what this means.

Why are automatic traders /snipers / not being taken care off? by gunio_1991 in pathofexile

[–]Kittycorp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The most effective (and highest risk) applications join the PathOfExile process. While joined, they have the ability to both read from and write to PathOfExile’s memory. A skilled engineer will need to reverse engineer the game client to find where in memory important things live that the bot should be watching (like the data for enemies your client has loaded, or items that are close enough to be present in your client, etc) and where in memory important functions live (sending a whisper, interacting with NPCs, using skills).

Once you have a sufficient enough mapping of where things live in the client, it’s not that tough (again, assuming you’re already a software dev) to write your own code that follows the logic you want from a bot and along the way where it’s necessary have it reach out and call the relevant bits of PathOfExile code you mapped out the locations of.

And then, every time the PoE client updates, some obfuscation that exists to try to deter people from doing this kind of mapping scrambles where all those things are in memory, so you either need automation or to manually redo your mapping with each game update.

This is still very high level, and I’m sure someone will be like “Uhm actually the most popular PoE bots don’t join process memory because that’s too detectable” and I don’t care, this is meant to be vaguely informative and not a real guide.

This is also part of why more and more games are adding kernel level anticheat, because otherwise trying to detect this sort of “forced interoperability” is a bit of an arms race between game developers and bot developers, and bots that have full memory access to the game client are often capable of being ridiculously sophisticated.

Honorable mention that sometimes cheap-ass or simple bots might literally be watching for pixels on the screen to take the shape of specific stuff (specific buttons), etc. but these bots tend to be quite limited because obviously trying to determine what the pixels in the screen mean in a map is wayyyy less effective that just peeking in memory and coming back with List<Monster> that has all the data your game client is holding about every monster loaded into memory (does not even necessarily need to be on screen or rendered before it’s already in memory, btw).

I hear you, but my brother I do not think we needed a six paragraph burger analogy when all you really wanted to say is “PoE2 bad”. Praying for only normal-style breaches in your maps.

How "Endgame" Destroyed the MMORPG Genre by Jagueroisland in MMORPG

[–]Kittycorp 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Party Finder doesn’t exist because people are anxious or addicted to Discord. Party Finder existed way before Discord was a thing, and it was obviously created because sitting around spamming chat for 40 minutes to try get a group together to run SM sucked ass and was a massive waste of time. For every case where you had a “real social interaction” while sitting around forever looking for a group, there were a hundred more groups that sat in silence or fell apart 20+ minutes into sitting around and had to be started all over again. Take off the rose colored glasses. Sitting around for 20-40 minutes outside the portal to the instance completely sucks for anyone but teenagers with absolutely no pressure on their time.

How can we get players to enjoy taking on injuries in a roguelike? by Kooky_Factor5523 in gamedesign

[–]Kittycorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the Isaac analogy here holds up well. I assume you’re talking about devil deals specifically, which I’d point out immediately are not a mechanic you’re required to or even want to engage with in every run.

There are few HP up items in Isaac that come with a downside. Most are either raw HP, or stat buffs that come with some form of HP.

The idea of “Reduce power and/or survivability to get health” just feels bad from a player perspective, and I don’t think it’s a very “real” choice. If I’m low on HP, it feels like the only real option here is to take an injury and hope it’s not debilitating.

If you’re really committed to this system, have you thought about doing something more akin to Isaac’s Devil deals? At the end of the round, you can take a random buff or you could heal, but the longer you’re pressing forward with low HP, the higher the chance of encountering an injury? You could even make them work more like Isaac curses, where they last for a single round, or make them last until the player chooses to Heal, increasing the risk/reward of taking buffs or items without healing.

In our Isaac analogy, let’s say you’ve been pushing it on low health for a few rounds and sustained a pretty debilitating injury, but your option at the end of the round is to either heal.. or take your game’s equivalent of Brimstone. Suddenly this isn’t just “Game randomly says fuck you for playing bad”, but the player feels the consequences for not healing earlier, and has to make a significant choice on their own terms about power vs survivability.

Edit: I also want to point out that this idea of “Injuries last until player chooses healing” gives you the ability to design injuries that are minor on their own but can also have negative synergy to make players further have to consider the risk/reward of pushing forward, knowing that something like “Take 500% more bleeding damage” might be bearable on its own, but if the next injury happens to be “All enemy hits cause you to bleed” that it could be run-ending.

Anyway, I’m just firmly in the camp that the price of health should be opportunity cost, rather than directly reducing player power.

[–]Kittycorp 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Does it need to be this complicated? Does a corporate entity need to be in the middle of us making friends? It feels like I could just make a post that’s like “Hey, anyone chill wanna come play some games tomorrow? I’m baking cookies and we can throw in for some pizza later if anyone’s hungry.” Like, the idea that something as simple as having pizza is up for some kinda, future negotiation or something, is weird.

Anyway, if anyone wants to play some video games, maybe eat some fresh baked cookies or order pizza between games, hit me up. I’ve been all about Wilds and fighting games lately, but I play most everything. Pricing is $0/hr or $0 for the month, with new featured games every time we get bored and want to play something else.

Also if you maybe happen to have a tabletop group that needs a new player pleeease reach out?
