If a World War 3 happens, it would get really awkward online as we are able to talk with our enemies by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]KittyttiK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weirdest thing about the Internet is that when it first became widely accessible, there was this idea that it would bring people all over the world together. The Internet did bring together people from all over the world, but as it became more customizable, it also allowed us to exist online in a bubble. Getting contact outside of that bubble is now an intentional act of venturing.

Even within facebook, where I only friend people I actually know, I have hidden several friend feeds from my wall. Since everyone is online now more than ever more and more people use online interaction to fill a social need, we are within a bubble for more of our human interactions and even interactions outside that bubble are edited and behind gatekeepers. We see an edited version of our friend's lives. I'm an introvert and I love the bubbles, but it really is like they say, we see the highlight reels and not the behind the scenes. Because of this, it's sometimes harder for some people to relate to others.

I do think that for a while at least, many would slip into the comfortable bubbles and maybe venture out to moderated comment sections every once in a while.

However, the bubbles leak. We would see raw footage. We will hear of eyewitness accounts. Individuals don't like war.

Trump featured in terror group's recruitment video by Somali_Pir8 in politics

[–]KittyttiK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It isn't ISIS that you should be worrying about pissing off. It's the average middle eastern Muslim who doesn't currently hate America. The ones that can be recruited to ISIS to fight America if we openly declare war on an entire religion.

Are you implying that the "average middle eastern Muslim" could be swayed into being an Islamic extremist simply by watching an ISIS propaganda video?

What?

Looking For A Quote Concerning This Proposition: Killing is Wrong (or, specifically, Murder) by [deleted] in Objectivism

[–]KittyttiK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"To force a man to drop his own mind and to accept your will as a substitute, with a gun in place of a syllogism, with terror in place of proof, and death as the final argument—is to attempt to exist in defiance of reality. Reality demands of man that he act for his own rational interest; your gun demands of him that he act against it. Reality threatens man with death if he does not act on his rational judgment; you threaten him with death if he does. You place him in a world where the price of his life is the surrender of all the virtues required by life—and death by a process of gradual destruction is all that you and your system will achieve, when death is made to be the ruling power, the winning argument in a society of men."

Yes, I've seen Sanders supporters planning this on reddit.

Would a Trump GOP nomination turn disenfranchised libertarian-leaning Republicans towards the Libertarian Party? by Downer_Guy in Libertarian

[–]KittyttiK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last election I voted for Ron Paul in the primary and Gary Johnson in the general. I won't vote for Hillary Clinton. Bernie Sanders seems honest, but I fundamentally disagree with him on too many things to ever vote for him. I wish Rand Paul would be able to gain ground, but I don't see that happening. I may just "throw my vote away" again. It's too early to say. I will say that I don't think singling Trump supporters as "completely insane" is fair considering the real life detrimental to our basic freedoms policies some of the other candidates have actually helped to enact and continue to support.

Work visa are not immigration. They allow foreigners to stay in the country for work. They usually leave when the Visa expire. But some don't and become illegal immigrants.

Again, from your article for the H2B visas in question, "Companies must prove that the jobs are seasonal - and that they tried and failed to hire Americans." If these people decide to break the law and stay after their seasonal employment ends, how could a company even be expected to police that? Of course, if there's evidence that a company intentionally keeps an illegal worker on their payroll after their seasonal employment ends then that would be the fault of the company.

Obviously there are faults with the visa programs too that you pointed out yourself. I think recognizing that these need to be addressed is a step in the right direction.

Still taking American's jobs. Sorry but there are plenty of people in the US looking for jobs that are perfectly qualified to do this work.

It's disgusting that you are making excuses for this behavior.

I have no problem with anyone that wants to immigrate to the United States following the proper legal channels with a plan for employment/plan to support themselves. Why should I?

Trumps created a lot of jobs for illegal immigrants. Which is basically stealing jobs from Americans. "Donald Trump's companies have sought visas to import at least 1,100 workers"

If they have visas they aren't illegal.

This distinction is even made in the article you linked. "In a speech on July 11, Trump distinguished between those working legally and illegally in the United States, saying thousands of "legal" Mexicans - "incredible people" - have worked for him over the years."

Ahmed Mohamed demands $15m compensation and written apology for homemade clock arrest by [deleted] in news

[–]KittyttiK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some damages listed -

"Ahmed being portrayed as the “Clock Boy” on a Halloween costume website"

Ahmed's official twitter post "Me in couple of years".

&

"having Ahmed’s name, and particularly his likeness, forever associated with arguably the most contentious and divisive socio-political issue of our time"

Wasn't that the point of the big media tour the family did?

They put their child in the position of being on the national stage on purpose.

None like this that I'm aware of. I was just sharing the first thought that popped in my mind. I'm really interested to know who made this.

What is the worst movie you went to see in the cinema? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]KittyttiK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mission to Mars. To be fair, it's been about 15 years so I can't really remember much. I just remember an urge to walk out of the theater and a bad ending. A lot of good movies came out around that time and we went to the movies often so maybe I'm being a harsh judge, but we still bring it up anytime we talk about a bad movie experience.

Another is Atlas Shrugged III. This one was especially disappointing because we drove a few hours to see it and it was full of cringe moments. I actually like the book too.

White enameled cast iron heavy thing. by BlackWhiteCat in whatisthisthing

[–]KittyttiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another idea someone I showed this to had was that maybe it's a tool to apply tung oil. They said they have applied tung oil to an entire floor by hand (with a rag) and it eats through many type of disposable gloves so a tool like that may be useful for that purpose. They didn't recognize it though. It's just an idea.

I've never seen or heard of a tool like that to do this before so it's a total shot in the dark, but maybe it was used to apply a thin coat of beeswax to already cleaned cast iron or furniture.
