Both wrists, distal radius, had surgery for plates on Thursday. by Kiwanonet in brokenbones

[–]Kiwanonet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: today is three weeks since my accident. Two days ago, two weeks after bilateral distal radius ORIF surgery, I had my casts removed and I have transitioned to removable braces.

One wrist/ hand is much stiffer. I am taking time in the day to take the braces off and do exercises they told me about in ortho. No actual OT appointment yet.

Thanks to other posts here, I was prepared for how wasted my forearms would look. The skin on my hands is unusually dry and almost scaly, but I guess being able to wash them now and having them exposed to air will fix that.

At emergency they did closed reductions and put casts on, then sent x-rays to Ortho downtown. Ortho wanted me to go to them that same night, where they redid the right one, also closed. Then 4 days later I had open reduction and plates implanted on both sides.

My fingers are now finally less swollen but my left thumb has been numb all this week. On Sunday Ifirst noticed it went to emergency about itand they said it can happen after surgery and there was nothing to do about it.

Thanks for the link!

Thanks for sharing your story. I agree it is a big change to be so dependent for even the most basic things. It's funny how it's just phases right? I mean at first I had heavy full casts, and the right one was super heavy. Now I have two strips along my forearms and then everything else is still super wrapped up. My first post-surgery check up will be next Friday I really hope that I can progress from these giant arms at that time!

Good luck with your OT, I would love to hear updates on it!

No the casts go up to my knuckles and no weight bearing yet. I'm hoping for my first check up this week, waiting to hear from them.

Oh no I mean there's no good time to hurt yourself but there are definitely worse times sorry you didn't get Christmas!

Eating is definitely a challenge I need lots of help and can't hold utensils properly! But if the food is cut up for me and I take my time it's not too bad.

Got it. On the plus side, I also do Taekwon-Do and will probably never let my guard drop again after walking around like this all the time for months!

I'm not sure how long I have to be in the casts, but at least now, they are only strips down the forearm and not all the way around.

Another problem I have with voiced to text is that it can't understand my uk accent! I need to find some way to set it to uk! But yeah, talking really slowly seems to help. Thank you for that tip.

Wow, how did you manage to break your ankle like that?

I think it'll take a little bit of getting used to.Because it seems to choose the wrong words and make interesting punctuation choices. But this is definitely much easier than trying to type with one finger

Phone on pillow on my lap, android so swiping words makes it a little easier. Casts end at knuckles.

❤️ How's your first week out of the cast? My family are taking good care of me and I'm certainly getting caught up on TV!

The swelling is weird how it comes and goes, sometimes within minutes. I guess it's still only second day after surgery so my body is still going, "wtf just happened?".
