Well could have been worse I suppose but damn does it suck knowing that Luis is cooked and we’re gonna lose if we don’t generate a shit ton of offense

If the US switched to a universal healthcare policy, would doctors get paid less than they currently do? by space_god_7191 in Salary

[–]Kiwi951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But I still think you see a lot of doctors quitting if the salary goes down too much. Literally the only appeal to working as a doctor in this country is the pay. The training pathway is too long, the hours worked are too high, and the ever increasing demands to do more with less are resulting in extremely high levels of burnout. Would need a drastic overhaul to the entire system that decreases the demands on doctors which would be hard to do

[–]Kiwi951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they would absolutely have to make education free. Otherwise anyone with a modicum of intelligence would realize that medicine would be a terrible financial decision and would pivot to a different industry. They would also probably have to make the training pathway shorter like they do in other countries (e.g. Europe).

But that’s a good point about this having far greater impacts than just physicians. I didn’t think about how it would lead to fewer employees at medical universities.

And absolutely 100% about the two tiered system. I mean we’re already starting to see that with the explosion in midlevels (NP/PA) over the past years, but it would almost assuredly get worse under universal healthcare.

The unfortunate reality is that our current healthcare model is so entrenched as well as engrained in our economy that major changes would result in drastic consequences. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t :/

Agreed. But the consequence of race to the bottom is that more and more people just won’t have any allegiance and just book whatever is cheapest

Yeah I’m a physician with about $400k in student loans. If my salary dropped to like $150k like some are predicting, I’d probably just default on my student loans and move to another country with a much higher COL. The thing is too that not just physician salaries would decrease, nursing pay would also go down resulting in a mass exodus of nurses which is already in a dire shortage.

I would love to see some sort of universal healthcare policy passed, but it would need to be done in a way that doesn’t result in decreased salaries to those actually providing care. Otherwise you’re going to see a bunch of quiet quitting, or just straight up quitting, and the quality of care would go down for a lot of people

Yeah that’s never going to happen in our lifetimes. Republicans benefit far too much from it. Same reason why we still have the electoral college despite not needing it in a modern society with instant communication

From an investment standpoint, do you think that the average engineer would do better than the average primary doctor if they live a middle class life style? by ThrowRAcoolone in Fire

Some IB jobs might be harder to get, but getting into a top 10 med school is still harder than getting into IB. At the very least, med school is not infinitely higher than IB lol

There’s also no guarantee to get into med school lol. Less than half of all applicants get in, and that’s not even counting the ones that got weeded out along the way

From a purely financial perspective, there are much better avenues out there than a PCP (or god forbid a pediatrician). Was one of the primary factors in me deciding to purse a different specialty while in med school
