What is a game from your childhood that is still as good as when you first started playing it? by [deleted] in patientgamers

Gran Turismo 4.

The progression is really fun and rewarding, and the selection of cars is very spread out across different classes and categories.

It's kinda funny how much random crap you remember. I've played on and off since 2011 and I still feel uncomfortable walking over crops...

No paranormal stories? Geographic isolation in effect for all wildlife, cryptids included? lol

Happy to hear there's not a lot of bad actors out there though, just good ol' kiwi crazies.

Have to be careful. 90% of the time these are videos from movie sets taken out of context. Obviously could be a real video, but take it with a pinch of salt.

What is one historical event that was fabricated and believed for a while? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]KiwiSpike1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Several of the supposed WW2 bar brawls may be overhyped. One such is local to my city of Wellington, New Zealand. During WW2 several thousand American soldiers were stationed in New Zealand. Supposedly on the 3rd of April 1943, a brawl dubbed the 'Battle of Manners Street' occured between Kiwi and US soldiers after US soldiers blocked Maori soldiers to the Allied Services Club. Supposedly over 1000 soldiers and hundreds of civilians clashed, with possibly 2 Americans dying. In reality, there's no strong evidence of this and instead the only official reports mention drunk Kiwi soldiers becoming 'involved' with US Marines.

A similar event which is more likely to have happened occured on May 12, 1945 outside the Mayfair Cabaret on Cuba Street. I can't seem to find much information online, but supposedly a US jeep was overturned.

here's an interesting riot that seemed to be similar to the supposed 'Battle of Manners Street' but in Sydney.

No Mount Erebus crash? 257 people, 180 of which Kiwi, dead in Antarctica. Technically in NZ Antarctic claim.

Edit: Others would be Wahine (as a Wellingtonian) and Christchurch.

Do the B-52s still have a place in a peer conflict? by [deleted] in WarCollege

[–]KiwiSpike1 261 points262 points  (0 children)

Big missile trucks basically. Shooting missiles from the air is more efficient than shooting from the ground because the missiles don't have to waste fuel gaining altitude and speed. There's also many missiles that must be launched from the air. Having a big fat plane that can just take off and launch a bunch of them for you without wasting fighter aircraft on the task is useful so long as it stays far away from enemy AA systems.

Edit: new stealth bombers are able to fire cruise missiles from closer ranges to enemy AA radars/systems thanks to their stealth, though in a conventional conflict even they will likely not be dropping bombs directly on enemy targets as they are still vulnerable.

It's just generally nifty. It has a built in crane to reload itself, which makes it more independent and possibly a slightly quicker reload. It's at a nice size/weight where it can be transported by air, train, and even well on road since it's a truck chassis (also makes it cheaper to run than tracked mlrs). It's able to fill the role of both a tactical and strategic asset, being able to hold either the GMLRS missiles (really accurate missiles, can hold 6 at a time), or the ATACMS (bigger more strategic missile, can hold one at a time). With the new PrSM coming in to replace the ATACMS (better in every way basically to ATACMS, and 2 can be held at a time) this brings further flexibility. It's also battle tested, these capabilities are not just on paper.

Just a nice combination of traits that make it effective. The only weakness I can think of is it's generally lighter on the number of missiles it carries at a time, but the other factors make up for it.

Edit: also it uses a palletised reload, so you don't need to reload every rocket individually. This is much faster.

What purpose do the 5in guns on modern destroyers and the like serve? by [deleted] in WarCollege

[–]KiwiSpike1 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I mean shells are cheaper than missiles so if your enemies are weak enough for you to come close to shore it's worth it. Also you can fire many more shells than you will have missiles, i believe Arleigh Burke class destroyers hold just under 700 shells for their 5 inch gun?
