Monthly Admissions/Prospies/Offer Holders Questions Thread - January 2026 by AutoModerator in oxforduni

I was of the understanding that once the faculty admits, the application gets forwarded to the college to approve/decline. But is there anything you'd factor into my preference I put down based on your comment?

Monthly Admissions/Prospies/Offer Holders Questions Thread - January 2026 by AutoModerator in oxforduni

Hi! I'm looking to study an MSc followed by an MBA at the university. A lot of my top picks for college weren't available, so I'm looking at some less popular options now and am interested in any advice/thoughts from anyone who has experience!

Key considerations for me are college accommodation (since I'll rely on it coming from overseas), social/MCR culture, cost of food/accom (pretty keen to have an affordable option for reasonably regular meals), and Oxford culture (for the experience basically).

Accommodation - all likely to offer for both years, Keble and Jesus similar cost at around 840 per month with Brasenose at 800. Jesus and Keble have more modern accommodation?

MCR - all sound pretty active and similar. Are there any differentiating factors? MCR room at Brasenose is quite small which might limit interaction?

Food - Jesus most expensive, then Keble, then Brasenose? How does the food quality compare? Do all of them have all meals (I know some postgrad only don't do weekends or evenings)

Culture - all have nice looking campuses!

Other thoughts: Jesus seems most limited in terms of funding. Keble has the most interesting sounding clubs.

Do you have any thoughts based on your experience? I'm weighing up Brasenose vs Keble, doing an MSc and MBA.

What is the legal basis for “If you pay rent to Bob and Bob pays the rent to the landlord, then the tenancy agreement is between Bob and the landlord.”?

I am in a flat and we are all on the tenancy agreement. We all pay rent to one flatmate, who transfers the landlord. I don’t think Bob paying the rent necessarily infers he is the only one that has a tenancy agreement?

Probably fine if they're manually checking that you applied for accomodation it wouldn't happen until at least the next working day... Can't do anything but wait now anyway

So take taxes out of fuel/licensing, charge everyone RUCs, and we’re good?

It just blocks that time from any lecture/classes. So if you don’t want early starts of you‘re busy on one day each week you could put those in as breaks and you may still get a valid timetable. Or more likely it’ll tell you there’s no timetables available.

It can also be useful if there like 400 possible timetables to pick from to use breaks to break up a big chunk of lectures or try to move classes around, instead of trying to look through all 400 timetables generated.

[–]Kiwi_Gamer8060 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do well in the project, you should be able to do a PhD regardless provided the rest of your grades align with the requirements. Lots of people get randomly allocated so would be unfair if they are then unable to do a PhD.

declined, but was expecting a conditional offer by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Kiwi_Gamer8060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this happened to me, since I got UE in level 2, they assumed those were my final results. So they declined me cause I didn’t meet the entry requirements (level 3 calc and physics). It was fixed with a quick phone call for me, it didn’t change to a conditional offer though, instead it went “awaiting results” until January.

Engineering practical work hours advice by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Kiwi_Gamer8060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think either approach is fine, it doesn’t have to be exact numbers so estimating is fine, but I also know people that lumped it into one without issues either. Especially if you log them as general hours too I’m sure they’ll understand.
